The world has been ravaged by Crusades led against mages after a nightmarish plague exterminated a third of the world's population with a festering, necrotic rot. Mages have always been thought of as heretical, and have often been hunted, but the plague was devastating enough that men and women everywhere united and took up arms against them, believing that the Divines had punished all mortals for allowing their heresy to thrive. The Church, long resentful of mages, sanctioned the Crusader's efforts, and noblemen soon followed. Thus began the movement to exterminate all unsanctioned mages.

Breaking through a treeline, a lone, young, and desperate mage slings a hastily conjured spell at the ironclad crusader behind them. The zealous crusader easily blocks it, brandishing their weapon, moving in to slay the exhausted mage.

You are Stan the Manly Man, righteous bowman, slayer of witchcraft practitioners, and alleged master of the longbow. Though you haven't yet slain a mage, before the Crusade, you've fought many usurpers and participated in many battles from afar. Despite what some might say, you're no coward, you simply feel you can accomplish more if you're in one piece, and out of sword-range.

The witch you're chasing wears a dark cloak and cackles incessantly. The leaves and shrubbery wilt as she passes, and you're quite glad you won't have to be getting within ten-feet of her. You chase her for nearly an hour, as she bobs and weaves between the trees, you're unable to aim and shoot, as that would grant her the time to escape, and the forest is too dense to get a proper shot off. Suddenly, she stops and turns to face you, her skin is pale as the dead, her hands glow with purple energy, and her eyes emit a deep black glow, truly, she is a vile witch indeed. When she speaks, her voice is extremely upbeat and cheerful.

"Well well well, it looks like my Knight in shining armor's finally caught up to me... Avant garde!"

Her hands glow and flicker back and forth in rapid symbols. She mutters incomprehensible incantations, and the life around her seems to fade as she grows stronger.
