Adventure mode...what?
« on: December 24, 2016, 05:55:12 pm »

Alright, so I have played a fair amount of dwarf fortress in fortress mode and absolutely adore it. And recently I have been trying to get into adventure mode, however it seems entirely ridiculous. for example, last time I started off as demi-god for starting stats and took all combat. I took the recommended stats from the adventure quick start wiki. I grabbed an axeman and maceman as followers and set off on the starting quest to kill some bandit. I eventually get close to his camp and he promptly jumps us. on his own, no back up and immediately kills both of my followers and me without even sustaining a wound. Like what? How is one supposed to gain any degree of ability of immediate death from even the starting adversaries is all you face? any suggestions or pointing out of what I am doing wrong would be appreciated.

You were fighting a weaponmaster, who has great skills in weapons and stuff. Also, get armor! It will save your life many many times.

Well armor would be nice, but you don't start with it. and If you die immediately how are you supposed to get a chance to get armor?

If you start as a dwarf/elf/goblin, I always head to the nearest fortress and get iron armor from the stockpiles. Humans? Just root around the mead halls and keeps for bags full of equipment.

Alright, so I am used to the difficulty of dwarf fortress. I love the game, even the learning process. but even when fast traveling to the nearest fortress or keep or whatever I so often just get jumped and instantly slaughtered regardless of if I have soldiers with me. And even if I try to run away it seems everything is so incredibly fast that they can run you down. The mode as a whole just seems poorly constructed to be honest. unless there is something I am missing here?

You press shift+s to run, if you don't know.

Did not know that, but I checked. Shift+s does not make me go any faster. and I cant find anything called sprint, or fast movement related anything in key bindings. Mind elaborating on this alleged sprinting? lol

Shift+s brings up a menu, and you can use the arrow keys to change your movement speed. Also, press shift+a to aim your attacks, if you don't know.

Shift+S just makes me sneak, no menu, is that a key binding issue? if so what is the menu called in key bindings so I can figure out how to open it and set speed?

Not is the fast travel menu, just when you're standing around.

I press shift+s to get that. You might want to check your keybindings, or you could upload your entire game folder (not the save, the entire game) to DFFD.

Is capslock on? Are you pressing the shift key first, holding it while you press the "s" key?

Re: combat: you may not be assigning stats at the start very efficiently. Being a good fighter/weapon user gives some degree or protection, but shield user is required for shield (iirc), armor user if you want to use armour well (which you really do, on the staying alive front), and dodger if you want to not get hit by stuff.

You also want very high agility and strength for combat. Endurance is also useful, I think, as is willpower maybe?
I failed to read this.

As a tip: hit with your weapon at the easiest target as long as it's a neck, head, chest or (if you have to) lower body. Especially with crushing weapons, head is best bet. If the other guy has masterwork weapons or armour, this is a bad sign as they might be legendary in a weapon skill, so try not to engage them. Don't mess around with megabeasts at first, they'll gib you. Don't tempt fire, water or gravity either if you can help it.
