Durango - A Nexon Dinosaur MMO (Mobile)
« on: December 23, 2016, 08:12:05 pm »

Anyone seen this game? It's in Limited Beta, it seems super amazing. It's a mobile game and features crafting, what looks like a complex skill tree, specializations such as building/weaponsmithing/farming etc.

Also includes hostile dinosaurs, trains, and hostile dinosaurs riding on trains.

I got a beta key just by hitting an in-game link. You move, play, and fight in real time, it's not one of those clicky time wasty things (at least not yet)

Well, I'm finding that harvesting dates is oddly theraputic. I now have 77 of them. Time to follow that dog, again!

Looks more fun than the cutesy farmville-type game I'm using to procrastinate now. Giving it a shot.

EDIT: Wait, isn't Nexon the company who made Maple Story?

EDIT2: Oh my god this thing takes forEVER to download assets. It keeps getting stuck. I just finally made it through the intro and am now stuck at 47.6% downloading "shrubs_03.prefab.bundle". If it's going to be this slow, it's really not worth playing. My internet connection is just fine...

That's odd. I never actually SAW it download any assets, even though it said it would. Maybe it's the phone? I have the new S7 (inflammable version).

Also I spent like 3 hours messing around before following that dog. Was the best thing. Also, you can cook those dates if you get sticks (boughs for instance) and roast em' over a fire.

I think it's more likely the internet than the device, depending on where their servers are. My tablet is pretty fast. It was downloading the assets really tiny in the bottom left - if it was going quickly for you, you might not have noticed. Or it might show up differently on tablets than phones, I guess.

I finally got in (as Airova) but I'm underwhelmed. There's a lot of people there running around stripping all the resources and just generally getting in the way. I also hate how there's a "chat" window, but to use it, you have to obscure the entire game. Kind of pointless. The interface in general is really confusing - TONS of information everywhere and the tutorial is trying to force me to do certain things without teaching me what the rest means. Very confusing. And the combat seems really laggy. Overall, just kind of... eh. I don't see anything that makes this any different than any other MMO - grind, grind, grind, oh look a dinosaur, grind. I guess MMOs are not for me - I already have a massive backlog of games. Don't need to waste time doing the same repetitive actions over and over again with no real goal.

Yeah I could see that if you have other MMO's to worry about you might not want more. Also yeah the tutorial doesn't seem polished yet.

I do like building my estate up, I have little pens for my animals and workbenches and you can draw on flags so I live at Pikachu base.

Very buggy and laggy for me so far. I've got dead dinosaurs pretending to be alive, stuck in looping attack animations with annoying sounds. And a quest to "feed the starving compsognathus", yet absolutely no idea how to actually do this-- clicking the starving dino gives me no option to feed it, and I've tried dropping various fruits and meats nearby to no success.

The lag, though! Oh my god, the lag.

I've been looking forward to this game for ages, so I'm going to give it a chance despite the problems. It really raises my hackles when I can't complete a quest, though.

Edit: Alright, I'm getting a bit more into it now. Couple of questions though, what governs SP gain? Is it character level, or skill levelups? And also, is there a way to reset our skills? I'm just reaching a point now where I'm running out of SP to spend. Up until now, I've just been leveling all my skills equally to try everything out, but now I have a better idea of how I want to specialise my character.

I refuse to rebuild the sign because that costs resources.

I instead kept it as my public shop, and named the shop Tremenbest Shoply. Somehow it is extremely popular and I am extremely rich. I don't know what to think anymore.

I don't know if there's an option for skill reset. I'm ok with these bugs because it is a beta, after all. Latency problems are one of the main things they are trying to test with these open betas. Also, SP gain is based on character level if I am not mistaken.

I do definitely want a skill reset.

I figured out the skill reset. You can 'unlearn' up to 20 skills per day. You do that in the same way you learn them in the first place.

The more I play this, the more I like it. But I'm worried about the IAP once it's out of beta. This is Nexon, after all...

I'm more concerned about what the ultimate end goal is supposed to be; from what I've seen, it's... build up the biggest camp you can, with exploring outwards bring the means to that end? Which isn't really my cup of tea; I'm more Gear Grind, Fashion Wars or Kill the Big Foozle than building stuff.

Actually there is a clan war system. My clan is currently trying to claims some land.

Also oh my god thank you for the skill reset. And yeah, Nexon.

They confirmed they ARE going to wipe beta data, so be aware.

Survival games and MMOs (of which this is an example of both) generally don't have a big end-game goal. The goal is to simply have fun, becoming self-sufficient in the world or joining a clan and fulfilling a specific purpose for the community. As Dunamisdeos touched on, clan warfare exists to give an ongoing sense of purpose even for max-level characters, as there will always be other clans to defend your territory against and new players to bring into the fold, outfitting them, helping them grind and so on.

Just an FYI folks, the beta comes to an end on the 15th.

Rumor has it that your xp and skills will be kept while everything else is wiped. Make sure to attach your Durango game to your Google acct or whatever you use, or youll lose it.

Survival games generally don't have a big end-game goal.

Your mixing up survival games with "Minecraft clones" :P

Or rather... once you step outside games like Ark, Minecraft, and other multiplayer/MMO style survival games... Yep you get big end game goals.
