And you can't add new sorts of buildings, either; the only things resembling those are new workshops (which can only do reactions) and placable instruments (which can only be played).

Not quite true. If you want to write lots of DFHack script code you can do all kinds of amazing things with workshops. For example I wrote a machine that pumps liquid vertically up a shaft. "pipes" would be more difficult, but it could probably be done.

Note that unless you are good with Lua or C++ you may as well forget about it.

I think I would personally use instruments for that kind of thing nowadays.

Can instruments interact with the machine system?

You should definitely make some kind of tutorial or guide for that, considering that unbelievable lack of any kind of modding documentation for DF Hack

My tutorial basically reads "Go read the code".

Take a look at Rubble (see sig), specifically the "Libs/Powered" and "User/Powered/*" addons

While the self-taught method of learning such things strangely seems to be the prevalent method for those who do mod with DF Hack, some people would prefer to have a more detailed and explained method of learning, such as myself. It's not lazy or any less effective, it's just a different way to learn. Sure I could inevitably learn math or the alphabet on my own, but it's far easier to be taught.

Unfortunately for you (I am not being sarcastic, I share your preference) it is a lot of work to write good tutorials. Those who already know have lots of other things to do, so it never gets done...

Sorry.

I completely respect that. I wasn't being entirely serious or giving a command, it would just be a great convenience to help others get into DF Hack modding. Maybe one day, friend.
