Sayings of DF. (Sorry for overloading the forums...)
« on: December 21, 2016, 08:02:47 pm »

Got something you think the dwarves, elves, goblins, or humans would say as an idiom, simile or whatever in DF? Put it down.

Saying form:

Race: "Saying"

So, yeah...
Anything?

Not certain what you're referring to (I notice you give me no examples, which makes things difficult) but I think you mean like this:

Elves: Consider something as "soft as feathertree eggs", or eggsoft, something which is lost, or gone. Same way they loose their bloody feathertree eggs on the trading depot every sodding time.

Dwarves: To refer to something as deep, means that it's safe.

To be fair, I thought you meant our player idiom, such as to "aquifer yourself" or the clowns and circus, or candy canes... Those are pretty interesting little phrases, and I like our forum jargon.  :)

Yeah, pretty sure he meant in-universe idioms. I don't really participate in these threads, but just to help get the ball rolling, "praise the miners" seems like it could easily be a generic Dwarven exclamation for when something fortuitous happens. It all comes back to the miners.

Yeah, I meant in universe. Sorry for not clearing that little mystery up.

I think in the old days just about everyone might have said "ah carp" as a stand in for when everything seems perfectly fine, and then the unexpected happened.

(Is this forum jargon or in-universe? I'm looking for in-universe idioms, stuff a dwarf would say as well... an idiom!)

I don't think anyone on here but me ever took to saying Carp as a stand-in for crap. At the very least, I never noticed if I saw it. Consider it both, because I completely meant it in-universe.

I mean, we might see this stuff happen, but the creatures in-world lived it.

There's "strike the earth!" I guess. But no, we don't get to see much of their language in universe. Keep an eye on their little quotes at the top of their character sheets, perhaps?

(No, I'm saying what do you think would be sayings in the Dwarf Fortress world?)

(Then why don't you start us off? So far I've tried. Twice. I'm sure I'm a very trying person. How about you have a go?)

(Oh! Sorry. I didn't notice that it was you who wrote that  (soft as feathertree eggs) when you wrote the first time.)

Dwarves: Don't look a gift badger in the mouth.

(because we're muttering to each other outside the original discussion. And because it's amusing to us)

Kobolds: "you no take candle!"     ....Oh, no, wait, wrong game.

Dwarves: "as sick as the sun", referring to cave adaptation.

Some reason I can't get away from similes with the whole idiom thing.
