Better make way when the Witcher comes... (A Witcher Quest)
« on: December 19, 2016, 04:26:34 pm »

The Year is 950AR, about two hundred years since the establishment of the Young Northern Kingdoms. Since the First Landing the Northlings have spread throughout the Continent and settled these vast untamed lands.

Behind the thrones of the mighty stands the conclave of mages, who is the real power in the North. Yet even the mighty mages of the Conclave cannot deal with all the problems the wilderness of the Continent throws at humanity.

It is thus that the Order of the Witchers is founded. Men, improved by mutations, able to wield magic and with superhuman powers created for the sole purpose of killing monsters.

1. Who founds the Order?
A) A Wizard on order of the Conclave
- You will get access to large amounts of resources, wield influence at the courts of the kingdoms and get wizardly support. You also become a pawn of the political machinations of the kings and wizards and will quite often have to fulfill their demands

B) A renegade Wizard
- Scientific Know-how and magic macguffins, at the expense of only having the resources a single mage has access to.

2. Apart from the Founder, What connections can you draw upon (select 2)
A) The Kingdom of...(Enter one of the Human Kingdoms here, you can choose this twice)
- You are supported by one of the Human Kingdoms, you gain lands within it and a stipend by the Kingdom itself, it binds you politically but also secures you against the wrath of other factions
B) The Elves of...(Select one of the Elven Domains)
- Elven support means superior magical macguffins, research and ancient knowledge which humans simply do not possess. It also antagonizes the Kingdom of Redania and other Anti-Elven Factions and puts you smack dab in the middle of the brewing Human-Elven conflict.
C) The Dwarves of Mahakam
- Superior Weapons and Armors and the financial support of the Dwarven Banks. But you will also recieve regular demands to do contracts for free.
D) A Mysterious Man
- Provides a near endless supply of things for your order at the cost of...you dont really know actually
E) The Mage School on Thanedd
- The indirect support from the Conclave, in the form of magical education and books and tomes.
F) Oxenfurt Academy
- Your witchers recieve free extra Education and you have easy access to scientific tomes and books
G) It was actually a very, very rich Wizard (only works in conjunction with the Independent Wizard Option from 1)
- You are as independent as can be. no Political Strings attached to your order

3. Where will you erect the First Witcher School?
[Write in one of the Kingdoms and Realms in the North]

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here is a smaller Map. However it lacks a few of the Northern Kingdoms most notably Cintra, Attre, Strept, Toussaint and the Southern Part of Lyria.

EDIT: this one is better.

A

A: the kingdom of Redania
E: The Mage School on Thanedd

Caingorn

Wasn't sure which kingdoms were human and which were elvish, so I assumed all the ones north of the central river were human. Apologies if this assumption is completely wrong.

A Short History of the Kingdoms of the Continent

Human Kingdoms

Redania- Redania is one of the two original Kingdoms of the North together with Temeria. Incidentally since its inception it has been in a constant Customs War with its southern Neighbour and various Border Conflicts over The fertile Pontar Valley.

Redania is mainly surviving on its Agriculture and Horses. As such it is relatively wealthy compared to other Northern Kingdoms.
Society in Redania is heavily stratified and wealth counts nothing against birth.

Similiarly it is known for its strong aversion to the Elves and other non-human races in general. It is a deeply conservative and superstitious country.

However it also contains the Cities of Oxenfurt and the Free City of Novigrad. Novigrad is known as the Cultural Capital of the North and much of Redanias wealth derives from there, while Oxenfurt Academy is the Center of Learning in the North.

In earlier times Redania had also owned much of the Lands to its northern borders but had to give them independence in the treaty of Lan exeter.

Kingdom of Kovir and Poviss - once when spoke of poor people one spoke of "being as poor as a mouse in Poviss". Today the Dual Monarchy of Kovir and Poviss is the wealthiest Country in the known world, providing more than 80% of the Worlds Gold Production and having a monopoly on the magic-deadening Dimeritium and other even rarer metals.

Kovir, Povis and especially the capital Lan Exeter are known to be liberal, world-open and especially the Academy of Lan Exeter is sometimes said to even shadow the Academy at Oxenfurt.

Kaedwen - the Northernmost and largest of the Northern Kingdoms, Kaedwen is currently the largest nation on the continent. Its Capital is the former Elven City of Ard Carraigh. While being largerly under control of Sorcerers (especially thanks to the presence of the Academy of Ban Ard), Kaedwen is a deeply racist nation as the ruins of Loc Muinne can attest.

As with Redania and Temeria, Kaedwen is in an eternal struggle with Aedirn over the Pontar Valley.

Aedirn - Aedirn was one of the last areas settled by humans, especially thanks to the proximity to the Free Elves of Dol Blathanna. These Conflicts also feed a latent hate for Elves. At the same time Aedirn is fostering especially good relationships with the Dwarves of Mahakam.

The Country is known for its Dyeworks and its Breweries.

The Kingdom of Rivia and Lyria - the southern Neighbour of Aedirn, is only known for one thing its latent racism. It is relatively poor since the mountains are owned by the dwarves and the northern fertile valleys are claimed by Aedirn.

Angren- Is an independent forested region between,Sodden, Termria and Lyria. It would be rich if it could actually access its large forests, however most of its forests are claimed by teh Druids of Caed Dhu.

The Kingdom of Temeria - Together with Kaedwen the strongest Kingdom in the North. Temeria is rather wealthy in everything, but its population is just as racist and intolerant as Rivia and Lyria...and its kings and queens are known for their incestouus relationships.

The Capital of Temeria is Vizima and it also owns the Subject Duchy of Ellander. In Ellander one can find the largest temple to Melitele in the North.
It also owns the Island City of Thanedd (although that more symbolically than really)

THe Kingdom of Kerack - Established and conquered by a retired Pirate, Kerack is only existing because no one cares to take the land from them. Apart from its ingular city, there is not much more to say about the tiny nation.

The Kingdom of Cidaris - Another small Kingdom to the West of Temeria, Cidaris owns its wealth due to Fishing, Vines and  Ships.

Bremervoord - Is the Westernmost Nation on the Continent and the small Duchy mainly survives on Pearls. Yes, Pearls.

The Kingdom of Verden - on the Southern Border of Kerack and the Northern Border of Cintra is a Minor Nation of no Distinguishing features. Its capital is Nastrog.

The Kingdom of Brugge - Is a small vassal Kingdom to Temeria.

The Kingdom of Sodden - Is only known for its mead.

The Kingdom of Cintra - The Kingdom of Cintra is the Southernmost of the Northern Kingdoms, Controlling the Marnadal Pass to the Southern Kingdoms. It is relatively powerful, perhaps only outclassed by Temeria and Kaedwen in might.

Toussaint - The Engimatic Duchy of Toussaint is on all sides covered by mountains and seems to live in a tale sprung right from the Arthurian Sagas. it is known for its wine and the lack of an army. Instead it is protected by several bands of knights errant.

Ard-Skellige - A Small Island Chain to the West of Cintra, Skellige is home to a people as wild and hard as the Sea. Skelligers are mainly living off raiding, fishing and hunting and rearing ship. The Islands themselves are rather poor if rich in good wood. Skelligers are a belligerent people who trade and raid all along the continent and beyond. Yet they are also welcoming of strangers and other races and are well known for their hospitality.

Elven Realms

Dol Blathanna - "Field of Flowers" was the Area called, before it fell into the hands of Aedirn. Nowadays the Free Elves of Dol Blathanna wage a brutal Guerilla Campaign against the People of Aedirn.

Brokilon - Ruled by the Dryad Eithne, Brokilon is the largest continouus forest untouched by human hands. To enter it means death. the dryads of Brokilon know no mercy for humans.

Dwarven Kingdoms

Mahakam -  The Dwarven kingdom of Mahakam, is the largest exporter of iron and steel in the Northern Kingdoms. It is home to the Dwarves, Gnomes, Halflings and Bobolaks (a race of marmotmen).
