Stealing a slab to bring to my fortress.
« on: December 18, 2016, 09:09:24 am »

Hey, I asked this over on dwarf mode forum, they suggested I come here. Im planning to temporarily retire a fortress im playing and make an adventurer from it, send them to raid a nearby necromancer tower and steal the slab, bring it back to my fortress to make more necromancers. It will be my first attempt at adventure mode. How hard is it to get in and steal a slab? Does taking the slab disrupt the towers operations? Is it always on a necromancer? Id be fine if my fort still got attacked by the undead, I just want my own necromancers for live training, and imprisoned ones go insane eventually, means ill run out someday.

Considering the hoards of potentially armed undead? Very, very difficult.

BUT: these undead will not attack you unless provoked if you are also undead. Best way to do that is to becoma a vampire, by drinking the blood of one.

There will often be a great deal of books in the tower. One of these may do the trick, but any slab would be a garauntee, I think. You can read books very quickly, provided you have the reader skill at at least novice. If one contains the secrets, there should be an announcement that you've learned them. To be sure, hit [x ] and look through your abilities, see if "raise corpse" or something is one of them. If not, all the books you've read so far are duds.

Not sure if the necromancers will always be carrying the slab. They won't always be carrying the books.

Taking it should not have any effect on the tower, as the necromancers already know the secrets of life and death.

NB: most companions will either run away or get shredded unless undead when you visit the tower.

oh yeah just make an elephant man(if your world doesn't have one rhinos or elephant seal men are close second) and run in and wipe the floor with the zombie horde, if you do this with the door close the necromancers will not go aggro and raise the dead back.
and freely accept you to read a book.
zombies got nerfed heavily in the recent patch due to massive complaints and now can't really kill a knock out companion while swarming a large elephant with lil to no combat skills.

to be fair it's a lot easier to either brute force the slab or technicalities away with knocking over a statue to get vampirism and grabbing the book.
oh and citizen necromancers in fort mode will panic and attack their own undead sooo uhhh doing that you probably should set up a corpse pile away from the necro citizens.
oh and a vampire necromancer probably leads to drained dead dwarves coming back from the dead as zombies and getting into a fist fight with their killer because they freaked out looking at them and wanted them dead.

Currently most corpses go in the volcano, Im planning to secure any necromancers in their own area with airlocks, and a window overlooking a small corpse pile I can block and unblock view of and access to in order to control number of undead to be raised for training. Figure they will raise corpses, then I block their view, if i have to scare them to get corpse raising, ill put a goblin in a box to spook them through another window, they are immortal, so it will work forever, then send in dwarves for live training, maybe build a way to get them to the surface to turn back sieges by raising attacker corpses against them, then I just have to send out troops to mop up the undead, or burn them all. And as long as I keep the just necro (ideally, seems easier to deal with) or necrovampires away from other dwarves, they wont die, or be able to kill anyone. Maybe use them to dispose of nobles I dont like. Long as they obey burrows I can lock them in a wing of the library with writing materials and nice statues or something, make them churn out books for eternity.

An easier (non-vampire) way to get access to a necro tower is to lure the zombies out, and walk backwards until only one is range of you. Attack it, and repeat.

Basically I tried this and it was hilarious. Plus there are some interesting consequences of having that many necromancers. This fort was basically a huge library with 60 or so visiting scholars. 90 percent of them turned into necromancers.

or play a flying adventurer and lure them all out and fly out of their attack range.

Hmmm, I could swear they didn't attack if you were laying down but apparently that isn't the case.

This sounds like fun. Maybe I can build a private library to hold those particular books in, separate from my main library, minimize that risk. I wonder if I can get a necromancer to work as a tavern keeper in their wing as well, give them social drinking option if they still do that, small temples for the gods and stuff. Basically build a second fort inside my fort, with the only access being a windowed room over a corpse pile I intend to use for live training, and an airlock of bridges to move materials in or out if I need to, will probably wrap it around one of my magma tubes with a bridge holding back magma i can drop to flood the whole area if this becomes too much fun for me to handle, all my problems will just become more obsidian.
