Too many doors in my drafty fortress
« on: December 17, 2016, 10:28:08 pm »

I've been playing dwarf fortress for quite some time, through many versions. You must excuse my laziness, I should look at the past version changes. But then you wouldn't be reading this post. Do dorfs still complain of a drafty fortress? Just recently I have started large mine fortresses, think Moria. now they have so many wants I didn't even notice drafty feelings. If this feeling is no more would anyone like to comment about when it went away and why? I personally don't think dorfs would mind a draft. Because of all that beard.

here's the answer to my question:
"Complained about the draft lately" used to be an unhappy thought, and maybe still is, but it has nothing to do with doors. It applies to dwarves called up into the military but with little or no military skill. It goes away once they stop being "Recruits".
"Drafty" thoughts were removed back in v0.40.10.
Thanks Imperium3 and Loci!!

heh heh, I feel so silly! I guess that's why I love this game; it's half in my head!

I don't recall that ever being a thing, but I've only been playing a few years.  That said, if you build a bedroom or dormitory without doors, your Dwarves will get a bad thought from 'uneasy sleep due to noise'.

I seem to remember it was a complaint when rooms (such as halls or meeting areas, as well as bedrooms) were undoored. I haven't seen the complaint recently.

I like doors: When one dorf goes off the deep end (or turns into a werecoyote) it's easier to restrict the violence to one area. Yes, they might choose to take a door off its hinges and throw it around, but they're unlikely to do it to all of them, and with doors around the mayhem locked, there are less dorfs joining in and getting bitten, king-hitting their former friends, or getting hit in the head by a flying door. Personally, I have a lot of doors in my fort.

I wasn't aware of any problem with draft, but like Immortal-D I've only been playing for a couple of years. My understanding of the complaint about noise was that you used to get it when bedrooms were located too close to workshops (and, I might guess, should count taverns as well) regardless of intervening rock, but that it was removed some time ago, and wasn't affected by doors.

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

Too funny, great catch.  I was really scratching my head on this one, as I never recalled bad thoughts about drafty forts, or ever having to worry about doors aside from their interaction with invaders, pets, and socks.

I remember when the negative thought about a drafty forttress would be displayed while making huge vaulted entrances like it had something to do with open passages to the surface. I remember it being an issue at the same time as bats roosting in my vaulted entrace. Now I just go with a wagon hole to my depot with multiple bridges from various wealth producing areas. Also are vampires still an issue? Part of my vendetta against doors is against the secret rooms for crime and otherworldly acts. My understanding of the noisy bedrooms had to do with path distance to a workshop. Like I said I've played for so many versions when I come back to it I really have no idea what fun is missing. Especially when I focus on all the new fun; "So Urist you say you lack abstract thoughts? Whose fault is that? Sorry Urist, I forgot you mostly are looking at rough rock walls all year. Sing a jaunty hauling song why don't you?"

Also, it's not path distance to workshops, it's absolute proximity to them that determines noise. It transmits through rock.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Vampires are still an issue, but when three of my dorfs turned up drained of blood whilst they sat at the dinner table in a noisy bustling meeting hall, one after the other, I stopped worrying about vampires using doors to hide their crimes. No one noticed that there was a vampire sucking the Head Brewer dry right in front of you? Really? Well, that's the end of the good ☼wine☼, boys, we're back to well water and -dwarf beer- 'til I can train up another brewer.....

Heh. If you could actually get quality on booze, booze-cooking would be more than five times better than it is now.

As for the questions in this thread, wiki helps.

For instance, workshops do not produce any noise. DF2014:Noise - Dwarf Fortress Wiki

I might be more a role player than you are <grin> but if it helps, one of the other dorfs killed by that damn stealthy bloodsucker was an armoursmith. Difference is, we didn't need more armour.

Ya, ya. I just remember when I started playing this year, and was confused by all the "brewer is important, important enough to spend points on embark on" versus 'hold on - I look in game and booze doesn't have any quality?'.

Could be worse, could have been great diagnostican or whatnot. Though there's time to do that eventually do, if not caught.

No quality on booze is my pet peeve (and since I read the Littlest Cheesemaker... surely quality on cheese too!).  Of course, the economics of prepared food is already broken beyond belief, so I'm guessing we have to wait until that's fixed.

Prepared meals are technically the only way to give quality bonus on booze (masterfully minced dwarven beer, anyone?).

Granted, when applied to three booze stacks and 1 set at once, you get it applied more like 16 times than 4, with the way it's modvalue works.
