Frankly, I hope they dont automate a bunch of stuff--the fact there is always something to do is what gets me to keep playing--I dont have to wait every 24 fucking hours to do SOMETHING.

Saw some interesting stuff about trees and tree quality on the forum, mentioning some third-generation trees. Since the game (probably) started at the end of September(Admin player's creation date is 9/29), that would imply that trees grow to reproduce in about 1-2 months. That's faster than I expected. Specifically, this tile of trees is "Mature", which means it can spread more trees. Not sure how long it takes to reach "Ancient".

Well there is already a ton of automation.  For resources.  All construction has to be done by the player.

Keep in mind he may have simulated the world for an unknown amount of time before starting, or just placed resources manually

That's why "third-generation trees" is the important bit - it means that some trees that had spread from forests placed on map creation have already grown up to have baby trees of their own.

Now this can actually be considered to exist.  Yay.

Have any math nerds out there taken the time to figure out an optimal pattern for house/hut building?

This is what I started building...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But then I realized this might be a bit more efficient...

I'm sure there are even better patterns, but I'm probably not smart enough and definitely not motivated enough to figure them out. Anyone else care to try?

Vandeland has trained its first military unit (a pikeman)!

We also built a temple.

Religion and military, always a fun combination.

why not just build:

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhSh
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSXh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhSh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhSh
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSXh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhSh

for hut spam anyways?

For max pop, you're always just gonna want this:

SSS

Honestly, it'll take ages to ever get to the point where the 8 vs 10 house difference is going to matter, unless you're going for an extremely compact embark. I would even say that it may be worth building up huts to 5 or 6 on the edges, even though those are lost when you build a house, since it'll take a very long time and a lot of resources to chew through all the streets first.

Things are going well, financially, for my domain:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The big ones there are of course the sausages and lanterns, but don't knock the sand - that's only ~65 odd tons of sand - but sold at 50/ton (it pays to have the highest quality around!)

Here was me happy at exporting 6.6k denier of nails :p

I apparently also have 22k worth of reindeer meat, but it's minimum quality and the npcs don't buy nearly enough of it to actually get that 22k.

i've probably made several 100K selling sausages, made from 0% quality boar meat hunted by my lords or other unspecialized units.
Prices have steadily dropped though; but my capital is still raising without much help.

Whoa. I don't know what happened, but someone just dropped 600 pounds of 5* pork on me for $2 a pound. Thank you, kind stranger! (Immediately re-lists it for $99/pound)

edit:
Unfortunately I lack the right temperatures to get a serious sausage industry going, and I lack glass production material to make lanterns (sand but no salt flats for soda).
Soda's cheap enough, and lanterns are expensive enough, that you can easily buy everything you need off the market and turn an excellent profit - I'm importing the soda, iron, and lime myself.
