Houses provide more storage space, defensive bonus, a happiness boost, and a larger expansion coefficient. Huts are cheaper, but don't provide any of those things, and are eventually outclassed on a tile-per-tile max pop-cap basis.

In short, huts--above 4 or 5 are great to build kind of outside the city proper for cheap and reasonable pop cap + expansion coefficient.

EDIT: and streets are the best.

Also you can not build huts next to huts; only houses, gates, bridges and town centers.

And before anyone goes how do I bridge?  Know that bridges are just ways to move your urban sprawl over water.  Provides no movement bonus.

OCD apparently too strong, so far failing to find an aesthetically pleasing coastal location with dense forest and iron as a minimum.

I'm still not certain how one get's the money from a heir that liquidated a couple of domains.
Anyone know what needs to be done?

Just started in Tetra. Wanted to start in the north with you guys but it seems so long to get anywhere. Anyone down south?

I'm Anor Darkyn. I still don't really know what I'm doing but I definitely like the art and feel of this game. Cool stuff.

When starting your first character you are under a newbie bonus state.  You can instantly finish actions while you have it.  Which means you can teleport your self anywhere.  So you can can start where ever you want.

Heh. You are one of the domains I checked to see if I could liquidate :P I remember that owl.
You're quite hemmed in by bigger domains though.

Yeah, some french dude sent me a message (in bad english) a day ago, offering to make me his vassal. I didnt reply to it- it dosent seem like he is an aggressive player though, since he doesnt have any military units. Either way, I will do anything to avoid that 10% tax  :P

My city:

00642W:23417N

Is this a good spot?

You've got a metal in gold.
Perhaps try to get a mine and a furnace up and running asap.
Lots of forests so a lumberer would be handy. I think those woods can also be hunted by that lumberer as well if I'm not mistaken.
I think I heard that Schist has no use as of yet. But that may change.
And you've got a source of rock as well.

Seems standard enough :P

Oh forgot those meadows mean you also can't farm there. But that wouldn't be really probable with the cold anyway. You can probably raise cattle/etc and horses though eventually.

Is this a good spot?

Pros:
You have plenty of room to expand and no large neighbors.
You're on Tetra.

Cons:
No really strong resources.
It's cold.
Schist currently doesn't do anything.

I haven't yet grasped how useful a rock like granite is, in terms of self-sufficiency, compared to something like limestone where lime is used in tons of construction.

You have a hard road ahead of you (at the beginning) but plenty of potential.

edit: apparently I don't see the gold that Empty does.
