I need to make my dwarfs snap.
« on: December 10, 2016, 09:29:35 am »

Quite simply I need to make some dwarfs tantrum so that they may destroy some pre-built temples and get cursed because of it.

Only issue is my dwarfs are waaaaaaaaaaaaay to happy and no matter how much horror I throw at them (grievous injury, dead bodies, lack of booze) they seem to be fine!

So I need methods to make them snap and turn violent!

Suggestions?

The only time I've had this happen was when a werebeast infected a dwarf, and killed his wife and some other dwarf he knew. I had to lock him up, and I couldn't memorialize those dwarves, so he was locked into an eternal prison, torment constantly by ghosts. He snapped once, and then he also went into a fell mood.

Constant rain may have a worse effect on dwarven mental health than intermittent trauma.

Only works if you have a nice rainy biome though.

Do they have beds and stuff still? Chairs, beds, tables, all out of the question.

Set dwarves to do loud jobs around the dwarf you want to drive mads cell as well, wakes them up if they do manage to sleep, also makes them "uneasy due to noise"

You mentioned pre-built temples, I dunno if there's any active locations in your fort but if the dwarves are worshipping or meditating in any place, lock them out of it. Temples give huge happiness boosts, and locations in general are great places for them to relieve stress.

Also try not to have furniture built anywhere, have nothing constructed that they can admire (furniture, traps, etc), and try not to let them socialize and make friends either, unless you plan on killing those friends off.

I think your simplest bet is to wait a bit and have dwarf go berserk as result of failed strange mood, then topple statues in temples after destroying the workshop you guided them in. Should take about 3 moods on average, or perhaps little less than year? (mind the anger_propensity).

Otherwise, vengeful thoughts and seeing sentient bodies can cause spirals in sufficient amounts, I think.

A small number of dwarves have "doesn't handle stress well" or "cracks easily under pressure" in their description.

It's nearly impossible to drive a dwarf mad without these traits, and nearly impossible to keep anyone with them completely happy.

Animal traps baited with meat are reliable miasma generators. Exposure to rain and snow, being naked, and being injured give bad thoughts. Drinking nothing but water from a well gives increasingly bad thoughts. Assigning war animals and then killing them no longer seems to work well. If you let them learn armorsmithing or another craft until they produce a masterwork and then atom-smash their only masterwork then they get a really bad thought.

You'll probably succeed if you start with the right dwarf.

Keas, lots of keas.

But keep in mind only a handful of dwarves will get distressed, you need luck.

Also, don't give them beds, and let them sleep in the rain.  :P

Make 1 outdoor water source, lock dwarfs inside to get them cave adapted while they drink the last of the booze......let them out to drink the water....cave adaption kicks in....forced to drink vomit, they love that.    :P

Nothing is faster than fighting keas. At least I got distressed dorfs in minutes. :P

For individual stress, appoint someone as a noble then don't fulfill anything. Appointing a head of justice and not having a prison works too.

However, it is possible to get a lot of people into prison for taking banned exports to the trade depot then trading them, and that's a good way to raise stress...

You could lock 10 dwarves in a 4x4 temple with bad(rotten) food, water, and then dump dead dwarves on them through a hole in the roof. The stress of constantly bumping into each other combined with rotten food, rotten friends(literally), and only water might make them snap.

Assign them war animals then butcher them. I haven't done it recently but Girlgenius developed the method and it worked well for many versions.

Along the same general lines, gather up all the masterworks and drop them in magma.  Or leave them out for buzzards or keas or something that steals things.  They seem to really dislike that.

I did some ghost research that required making a bunch of dwarves insane. One of the problems I had with that method was that the emotional impact of masterwork defacement was based on how many masterworks the dwarves had. The scholarship of the time was that a a dwarf with one hundred masterworks and a dwarf with 1 masterwork both had one defaced the dwarf with one hundred would suffer 1/100th as much as the dwarf with one .
