(I'd also ask that any responses, discussion or side-stories go in here as well, so as to keep the DF forums a neat and tidy place! WHERE IT AT: www.twitch.tv/oaogigmaster
STORY AND COMMUNITY POSTSTOMBSTAKES 1 2 3 4 RyukanLATEST FROM THE COFFEE TABLE6/2/2017Stream continues! Tombstakes survives in fine form... somehow. We've hit but-tons of candy, and now those delicious cottony strands will FLOW! You might have noticed I did stop doing the lore posts, and... honestly, I just don't have the time.
Besides, I almost feel that granting Nightmare mode forts an actual srsface, coherent story is more than they deserve XD.
THE GRAVEYARD: Fortress which have died on DF: Nightmares...Råshedėm "Deathkey": Lost to Gig's computer going off the deep endShokmugusān "Cheesemurdered": Lost to goats not squeezing out enough milk to keep everyone fed on cheese, and an inability to grow plump helmets for drink.
Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat exactly is DF: Nightmares?DF: Nightmares is a unique play style for community fortresses, where we take suggestions from the community on different rules and restrictions, organize them according to difficulty, then create a joint game play experience with each fort by combining those suggestions together! Suggestions are labeled as minor, moderate or major rules; each fortress will have a small number of each.
Minor: these rules are primarily for flavor purposes, or represent initial obstacles that can be overcome and resolved without much struggle.
Moderate: these rules impose restrictions or requirements that, while not game-breaking, can cause significant damage to a fortress, especially in its first few years.
Major: restrictions or requirements that will remain permanent issues throughout the fortresses life, often shaping the design of the fortresses around themselves. Most likely to bring a !!Fun!! end to any fortress.
Each category of rule is worth a certain number of points. With each fortress that falls, we'll receive a score based on its lifespan, fortress wealth and artifact count. The higher our score, the more embark points and mineral density the following fortress world will have, but the more rules that can be 'bought' to make that next fortresses existence more precarious.
What is the frame story of DF: Nightmares?DF: Nightmares features the activity of a nameless being - called Other by most - that exists outside worlds and times, and seeks to discover just how far dwarves can go to survive. Whether it does this out of malice or simple curiosity is unknown, but its power and sinister creativity is immense. A collective of hapless dwarves (our viewership) is dragged along for the ride with each Nightmare he creates, who work with the memories that remain of nightmares past to restore some sense of normalcy in their lives. Each world that they visit is largely oblivious to this phenomenon, until the spirit of one of these dreaming dwarves is crammed into the mind of a creature unlucky enough to call a DF: Nightmares fortress 'home.'
What kind of suggestions are you looking for, and where can I send them?Literally any kind of suggestion will do, as long as it increases difficulty without instantly tanking an embark. Past suggestions have included evil biomes, empty embark profiles, building only in green glass, building the fort over the caldera of a volcano, mega build projects that need to completed by a certain date, and so on. You can give me your suggestions by posting in this thread, on our Discord server (link in the Twitch channel), or PMing me on the bay12 forums. You can also email me at oaogigmaster at gmail dot com.
Can I be dwarfed (have a dwarf named after me)?Dwarves will be named on a first-come basis from followers of my channel. I will dwarf any unnamed dwarves at the start of the stream, or as people follow my channel.
I'd love to watch, but I don't know how to play! And what are all these funny squiggles on your screen? If you're new to Dwarf Fortress, worry not! I guarantee that the context of my abject failures will help inform you of how
shitflawlessly masterful I am at Dwarf Fortress. The Dwarf Fortress veterans attending will likely be happy to help you with any questions regarding the game you may have; they're a friendly bunch. That said, if you want to know more, I know that captnduck on youtube has a
from-scratch and comprehensive guide to Dwarf Fortress. His series is on v0.40, which is a little behind present day, but not so far as to not bring you up to speed with the best of us!
Why stream Dwarf Fortress? One of the things I'm looking to push on my channel are games that 'Deserve some love.' They could be small indie games, games from past generations that still stand out in excellence and quality, or games that were well-made but poorly marketed. Dwarf Fortress has been a labor of love from what I've seen, both on the part of its creators and its fan base, but it does not have the exposure many other rogue-likes do, beyond living room talk of "Oh yeah, that's that obscure, impenetrable game that some people think is cool or whatever." Which is a real shame. I also believe, quite strongly, that success on platforms like Twitch or Youtube comes from how genuine the people on those platforms are. Many rogue-likes may engender moments of discovery, or wonder, or abject failure, but there is an intangible nature to Dwarf Fortress that helps make these moments genuine (and FEEL genuine) to both the person playing it, as well as the people hearing about it.
