Cover Letters
« on: November 26, 2016, 06:49:23 pm »

If I apply to more than one job opening how pertinent would it be to write entirely new cover letters? I mean like 5-10 job openings spread over several departments?

The days of human HR drones reading your applications are basically over.

Your cover letter needs to play buzzword bingo to get past the filters, then needs to be short, sweet, and to the point. Most HR drones dont get past the first page.

Keep that in mind when you are applying for a position.

Unique every time. Don't go generic. A single page.

This is probably good advice, although I can't speak to it myself.

As long as the cover letter is actually relevant to each position I don't see any reason not to save some time by not trying to write a completely new one for each application.

Thanks for the suggestions peeps.

Here's another question. I've written a number of cover letters, but I'm a bit at a loss when it comes to writing them for this upcoming/current summer application season. Y'see, pretty much everything I'll be applying to are internships either in production or development for film/television or literary internships at playwriting houses/theatre labs. I've had more success with just writing passionate, appeal-to-emotion type cover letters than those more technical-based (I guess you could call it), but I never know how to approach them when writing them for network positions--there's got to be thousands of applicants, and last year I applied to ~30 (probably a low number) positions and got one callback from a local place near me (didn't get the position.)

Any advice? Anyone working in the entertainment industry?

Well I would recommend getting them reviewed by people, It'll help pick out any strangeness that might have made it's way in. other then that maybe mention something flattering about the company since that'll probably never hurt.

Talk about what interests you about the company. Don't suck up or say anything dramatic like you don't care about money (because you should), but just let them know that you're doing this at least partially because you are interested in the company and you've heard good things (be specific).

If you need help editing these letters, I've experience doing this.
