Does Ice destroy things when formed?
« on: November 22, 2016, 07:40:46 am »

So I have got a nice system of defences going for me I think. Leashed animals for detection. Small path for invaders to take filled with traps as well as fortifications for marksdwarfs to stand behind. Another layer is a large cistern over all this where I got floorhatches over the path. My intention was that if needed to release the water down on the path and wash away attackers. First year has now gone with a filled cistern which froze and as it melted several hatches seemed to be deconstructed and they along with their mechanisms has been washed away.

Is it the Ice that did this? The hatches which had floors above the water didnt froze and remains.

Wait, the water's supposed to wash enemies off the hallway where your marksdwarves snipe them from behind fortifications?

You do know water will flow through fortifications, right?
Maybe Armok decided to spare your dwarves and that's why your cistern froze.

Nah, the walkway is surrounded by ditches.

Code: [Select]
FXCCXF
FXCCXF
FXCCXF

F = fortification
X = open space
C = floor

The immense flow causes some water to flow through the fortifications but just 1-2 in depth.
Anyway I realised that parts of the cistern was covered by rocks so now I build floors above it to keep it from freezing so that It's still a viable defence during winter.

You cannot protect water from freezing by building walls above it. Once a tile has been exposed to the open sky it will remain exposed to freezing forever, as well as supporting only surface plant growth, regardless of how much floors, walls, etc. you build.

As far as I understand, freezing water can deconstruct any building "touching" it, but not floors, etc., so yes, it should be the ice causing the deconstruction.

Crap. Looks like I'll have another release next spring then. Well enough space is still covered by natural floor to remain viable.

Put magma under it if you want it to remain liquid all winter.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Does it work if the magma is above? Because Below wont work atm.

The magma will only work if it is both adjacent (above or below) and flowing. If you fill the magma area unevenly (say, some are 3/7, others are 4/7), the random flow of magma will keep the water melted.

Over large areas, this will have a large impact on FPS.

If you have magma you needn't bother with the water; just use the magma in your trap instead.

But then his markdwarves won't get wet with puddles of water flowing through the fortifications, they'll burn alive.

With magma you don't need marksdwarves...

It's pretty hard to hit flying keas with magma. Engineering a magma-gun that fires continuous blocks of magma through the air is substantial overtaking.

Can you use magma in a mine cart shotgun?

Could you build a magma safe drawbridge and cover it with magma from a constant/pumped source and set the bridge to continually fling magma into the air?
