How in the high hell do I kill zombie hair?
« on: November 19, 2016, 11:47:07 pm »

I am having issues in a haunted zombie area. I want to atom smash all my refuse, but as soon as I try to carry any of it out of my locked refuse room, it animates itself and attacks. This would normally be no issue with even a single competent soldier, but the issue is that a "zombie head hair" will animate and be unkillable. Normal reanimated hair is no problem and dies very quickly, but the issue is specifically with the HEAD hair. No idea why this is, but all my military dwarves will be unable to damage it, and everyone trying to dump the refuse will automatically aggro it and won't do anything but pound on it. The result is I get half of my fortress all passed out from over-exertion, unwilling to stop beating the shit out of some unkillable zombie hair and I either have to savescum or accept that mostly everyone is going to starve to death trying to kill a hair.

The messages that I get are along the lines of
"The Hammerdwarf bashes the mule head hair in the head with his +silver war hammer+, but the attack glances away!"
"The Hammerdwarf bashes the mule head hair in the head with his +silver war hammer+, but the attack passes right through!"
"The mule head hair pushes the mason in the right upper leg, but the attack passes right through!"
On and on for infinity. How do I fix this?

Tiny indestructible undead is a known bug. You can use a cage trap to capture it, and atom-smash it in the cage if necessary.

Just don't try to kill it with fire, and it then catches the entire bloody fort on fire.

It is amusing imagining everyone hammering the hell out of an animated mule mane, though. "It won't die! Aaaargh! It won't die!!!"

Both head hair and head skin is (nearly?) indestructible when reanimated. If you search the forum you'll find several threads covering this question.
Personally I use DFHack's "exterminate him/her" on reanimated head parts (but not others) to work around the problem.
Surrounding your butchery and spinning farmer's workshop with cage traps is useful. Reanimated bits often get caught in traps, and civilians can dodge into traps and get caged (and thus get out of harm's way). To get civilians out you need to build the cage, hook a lever to it, and then pull the lever.

You should have a garbage chute right beside the butchery, and preferably have smoothed walls in it. At the bottom of the chute you'd have a raising drawbridge as an atom smasher hooked to a level. You also ought to have a door at the bottom to allow any dorfs that dodged into the chute to get out (after you've unlocked the door).

Put the garbage pile in the locked refuse room, and atom-smash it there?

The main problem is not to eliminate garbage, but to deal with garbage reanimating prior to reaching the disposal station.

The good news is you now have an indestructible training dummy. They train fighter, dodger, discipline and observer in melee, and also make excellent archery targets.

To get your trainees to ever stop you will need to deactivate the squad and set a civilian alert which does not include that area. Your dwarves will leave and then you either lock the doors or get it to path over a cage trap. DO NOT allow visitors near a skin. Visitors ignore burrows and will fight the skin forever.

To minimize production, have two tanners workshops and a butcher completely surrounded by cage traps and right next to an automated garbage disposal. Having a skin reanimate and then be chopped into head skin and body skin and then tanning the pieces before the pieces reanimate gives extra leather.

The only two useful ways to kill a head skin are atomsmashing and tactical cave-in. Freezing and dropping them into the glowing pits of hell should also work. Tossing skins and hair down a volcano doesn't work.

Well, unless you consider death by dehydration or starvation as not getting hurt, it actually IS harmful. In addition to this, at least head skin has fought and caused injury.

Civilians caught up in a fight might not break it off just because you enable a burrow, so reverting squads to civilians may or may not work.

I am not aware of any good method to keep visitors from going wherever they feel like as they ignore even citizen triggered pressure plates (although I have an idea for a visiting vampire eliminator). Visitors trying to leave a fortress locked up due to a siege have a tendency to roam all over the place (including down in minecart repeaters, so a redesign of those with a door might be in order).

Best solution i can muster other than training your dwarves to death is basically to wall it off...not very bright of me really, sorz...

The main problem is not to eliminate garbage, but to deal with garbage reanimating prior to reaching the disposal station.

The OP says 'as soon as I take it out of the locked refuse room'. So, the atom-smasher really needs to be in there. Or a garbage dump pit with magma in.
Because, frankly, this is DF. If you can't solve a problem with magma, you're just not trying hard enough.
