Battlefield 1 or Titanfall 2?
« on: November 16, 2016, 06:05:52 pm »

Hey guys,

I figured I was going to jump on one of the many releases this Fall and get either Battlefield 1 or Titanfall 2. I chose not to include the Call of Duty series because I've had enough of those. That being said, Battlefield and Titanfall 2 are completely different games, I know.

What I think I'll enjoy about Battlefield 1 is the scope of the battles. Dozens of players with bullets flying passed you as you rush to an objective. You are but a small yet integral part of the war effort.

As for Titanfall 2, I understand that it's similar to Call of Duty whereas it's a little more twitch-based action packed, but I really dig the setting (Futuristic) and the mechs seem pretty rad.

I'm going to be getting another copy for my brother so there's definitely going to be some co-op.

Do any of you Urists have any experience with either of the games and which would you suggest?

I expect Titanfall 2 to die the same death that the first one did. Battlefield 1, from what I played of the Beta, is the same exact game as the past five or six, except with more bolt-actions and fewer helicopters. If you like the formula you'll probably still like it, but it's bog-standard slightly-less-casual-than-CoD-casual-shooter through and through.

Honestly, I'd say go for Battlefield One if you wanna be a badass world war one soldier.

Go for TF2 if you wanna be a badass sci fi soldier.

Both look fun, can't have either because no next gen console and no desire to pay for online play :P

Titanfall 2 has a lot going for it. From what I've heard, Battlefield 1 is basically a reskin of the BF games. If you're looking for that, awesome. TF2 is pretty different in terms of gameplay - you've got your parkour, your titans, your fairly deep customizability, your quick, fast, furious 10m matches, your short but really good campaign, and MP game-modes which are genuinely tactical (Bounty Hunt is sooo goooooood).

I'd personally go TF2 and continue playing whatever BF games you already own. I think the choices that were made for the release of TF2, i.e. no DLC, all free content, are worth supporting. I mean, besides it being a great game. I got 56 hours on the first Tifanfall despite getting it well after it was released, and 20 so far on Titanfall 2, which I sincerely hope will continue having an active MP community for a long time to come.

I haven't played either, but by all accounts BF1 is an irredeemable pile of proverbial.
Perhaps it would have been less panned if they named it something more accurate, like Battlefield: Dieselpunk, and abandoned the WW1 theme entirely? I don't know, either way Titanfall sounds and looks far more realistic from the little I've seen. I watched a fair bit of BF1 gameplay footage, too, since my friends were hyped for it before it came out.

...Man, Titanfall actually sounds kind of interesting.
Maybe when/if I get a PS4 I will pick it up and try to get into it. :)

Just a note: Jim Fucking Sterling Son has more or less endorsed Titanfall 2 as an actually good game. He noted that it is leagues ahead of the first one, and he noted that it has promised to avoid things like fee-to-pay DLC and such (though as always noted that we'll see if they stick to that)

On the negatives he did note that it will more then likely be a budget flop for the company, but hey that isn't your problem.

So if you follow the Jimquisition then well, there's your recommendation.

I played BF1 for quite a number of hours, and I'd say it's definitely more fun/better than the other Battlefields. I played BF4 a lot, and had all the DLC and whatever - I enjoyed it, but there were many matches where I just sort of got really tired of it.

BF1, with the inferior weaponry and less 'one hit kill' guns/helicopters/planes, feels a lot more 'fair' and less prone to expert players just destroying you mercilessly without you being able to react. They've added a lot of mechanics to make it more fluid and visceral, and you get some really awesome moments out of it.

I remember one in particular where I was being chased by three people - was running flat out, barged through a door into a house, ran upstairs and then hunted them through the rooms - really great gaming moment. It's one of the few games where my friends and I sort of sat back and chatted about our awesome moments in the previous game rather than just speaking about other stuff in the breaks.

I've not played TF2 yet, but from what I hear they're pretty much on par with each other.

TF2 is a great casual multiplayer arena shooter that is ruined by devs that only care about milking the cash cow.

It's still fun, but the game isn't what it was and the last few updates have been extremely lackluster.

Do you mean Titanfall 2 or Team Fortress 2? I was referring to Titalfall when I said TF2 (I should have clarified - it is confusing!)

I agree with your assessment of BF1 completely. The balance on the vehicles alone makes it the best BF game I've played in a very long time.

Yeah, it's definitely the most balanced, and it seems to have prevented some of the more 'pro' strategies (see camping/exploits) of the past ones.

However, the flip side of this is that it's a bit more 'casual' - with BF4, I spent ages practising (and specialising) in certain vehicles/weapons, and it did feel fulfilling when I got good them. Some of the best game play moments were when you were in a team with a few specialists in different areas, and you could see it all coming together in a sort of combined arms approach.

With BF1 it's more a bit more pick-up-and-play - but in a good, solid feeling way.

Quote
battlefield 1 vehicles are balanced
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA- you were serious?

Holy shit, no, no fucking way, unless they completely removed (among other things) the light tank from the game after the beta. Shit was the most broken thing I've ever seen, every single match where I got into one ended up with me waaaay at the top of the scoreboard with at most one or two deaths if I got extra ballsy and camped in town for a long time. Didn't do badly out of it, but that thing was a free ride to points and basically unkillable if played properly.

It's a shame, too, because BF1 actually did a decent job at nerfing and discouraging the usual bush-wookie snipers, to the point where I never saw a match with more than 20% of each team hiding on some ridge or rock missing all their 800m shots.

--

I don't endorse BF1, either. If they got their shit together and made it mostly bolt-actions on every class (with primary weapon limits akin to RO), I might actually think about it, because I could really go for a fast-paced shooter with that sort of early-mid industrial age tech, even if the campaign is shit and the tech is pretty anachronistic for a WWI game. But they ain't gonna.

Also went and watched some footage of TF2. Still think it's gimmicky as hell, but the campaign looks decent.
