Alright, I gave it another go, this time using the Amber client.

Pathing issues still remain, though I note Amber client has an alpha version of a fix for this. There's a couple of other good quality of life features there too.

The wiki for the game is honestly pretty dreadful. Perhaps I'm a spoilt brat, but I judge other game wikis by the benchmark of Dwarf Fortress, and this one fails pretty badly.

So I started a new character after I let a badger eat my old one, then tried again. Worked through the Foraging skill, into Hunting, into Carpentry and so forth. Foraging has to be my least favourite part of this game so far, since it requires walking long distances from home, constantly bumping into stuff, then teleporting back when your inventory is full.

I also got lucky and scored a deer killed by a wild animal early in character creation, but Tanning is a hellishly long process from start to finish, taking about thirty to forty hours of real time to complete. Large scale leatherworking seems unviable without a big base of operations and a constant source of hides from domesticated farming.

Still, I've got a decent little wilderness campsite set up, just waiting for someone to come and rob it. Lucky for me, there's only about a hundred or so active players in this game, and I've yet to see any sign of another player. So, yay I guess? It's an exercise in ennui to build something you're not sure anyone will see or care about.

And what aspects of the wiki are most broken/least clear to you? I try my hardest to update it with good info, but unfortunately, being the only person who regularly updates it, work is slow. some newbie input on what needs to be done would help me.

It was however a ton of fun until that change, being in a tribe and working together. But, they made Haven and Hearth a solo focused game. A game you couldn't even easily play with friends.

I suppose I should address this in the OP aswell. since you last played, a temporary object called a wilderness beacon was implemented. once built it allows one character to fresh spawn at that location, so groups of players can meet up without being able to spam dozens of characters.

Additionally, charter stones, which are built by villages, allow teleportation to and from other charterstones, as well as letting new players spawn at these charter stones with permission. so joining a village or starting with your group of friends isnt impossible anymore.

hearth secrets, kin lists, and parties are all still part of the game, so even if you dont spawn with your friends, you can still  talk with them.

I'm also now in the game, and yeah, the rivers somewhat butcher the experience.  However you can find shallows on them.  It just takes a lot and lot and lot of walking to do so.  I still haven't finished the quest chain because of it.  xD

That said, I'm in an 'okay' location, but several smaller places are around mine, but I have yet to actually see anyone else.  Even the large village nearby is all but empty, but is still in good repair.  Time zones between us are probably really different.  Lol.

As for other things, I'm still playing around with the game.

Lists are important for a wiki. Lots and lots of lists. The food and curiosities pages are good examples, linked on the front page, searchable by various features.

Things I had to go digging for as a player:

Terrain types (I don't know what that colour terrain on the minimap means, they're not labelled in game)
Tree types (unless it's got fruit growing on it, I have no idea what it is, they're not labelled in game)

You're the one responsible for the most recent versions of these pages too, so kudos for a good amount of info when I found them, especially for the Terrain page. Both of these could use a link from the main wiki page since they're launching points for parts of the game that make up a significant portion of the experience. There's still stuff missing like Native Terrains for the trees, but for a new player it's more important when they're given the Something to Eat & Drink quest - Acquire birch bark - to be able to quickly see what the hell a birch tree looks like in the game. I got to this stage in the quest chain, searched the wiki, and got a legacy version of the birch tree without a current image, and a page for birch bark saying, and I quote: "Find a birch tree. They have white tree trunks and a fluffy, bright green crown. Right-click on the tree to bring up the option 'Take bark'." About as fucking useful as a pedal powered wheelchair.

Anyhow, I think I've got the game mechanics down for this one. It's basically a huge status bar game, with timers for using items to create "Learning Points" which are a parallel to "Experience Points" but take time to generate, timers for item productions from farming, leatherworking and other item creation aspects, timers for your hunger to increase your stats, timers for world objects that generate unique resources, and timers for other stuff I haven't probably found yet too. It's basically an exercise in managing all your timers efficiently to maximise your resource generation in order to get bigger numbers. Plus the bonus of a possibility someone with bigger numbers will come along and kill you, forcing all your status bars to reset.

In other news, I created a settlement to the northwest of Dis, which from what I can tell is the biggest kingdom around and offers some hefty bonuses to anyone within their area. Since DF players never take the easy road, I made sure I was too far away to gain said bonuses. So far I've managed to crap out a well for water since I'm landlocked for miles in any direction, and that's about all until my status bars tick up more. I did manage to score a bear corpse, but since I'm a newbie I'll probably botch up the crafting process and the cloak I make will be the worst possible bonus of its type. Still, I bet it'll look pretty swag.

Thanks for the input. I can proudly take credit for the terrain page, i made the whole thing. there are still quite a few terrains i dont have access to though.

And yes, if you boil it down to its most basic functions, haven is a number grinding game. its best qualities come from building, exploring, and player interaction.

How far northwest are you? because I'm also in the extreme northwest of the map. It's more or less uncharted territory, even for the Dis crew. if you're close enough, i could probably spare some stuff.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

There's no planned world reset. As convention stands, its reset when the server crashed or a very large update is needed. My recommendation is to start playing. the way updates for the last 3 months have been handled, there is no hint that there is going to be a world reset for a long time.

Does the game still include obligatory packs of murderussians?

The obligatory russians are still there, but chances of being murdered are pretty darn low nowadays. newbie protection for big factions, along with the hype from starting a new world are long gone. if you have a claimed base and a wall,  you're almost guarunteed to not be killed as long as you stay close to your base.

When I played ages ago, that was the direction to avoid because all the russians and player killers were up there. That was no man's land for everyone else lol.

Then SE direction was the direction to go if you wanted to be a hermit or/and just play with a small group of friends. No one went SE barely, and the few russians I encountered that direction were really friendly. Everyone else was pretty friendly down SE part of the map as well.

But again, that was years ago. I think maybe 3-4 years? maybe 2? So maybe things changed.

Yeah, the further you get from the center, the safer you are. If you're looking to play it safe as a hermit or with a small group, the best strategy is to make it to a border and then  find a nice place to set up.


If anyone really wants to, I can offer setting up a temporary spawn location in the northwest for new characters. I can't guaruntee you a place to stay, but I can cut the ~5 hour trip to the northwest for anyone looking to play as a hermit or with a small group. just PM me and we can work something out.

I'd take the offer to relocate but if there's not really going to be any player interaction I don't really see the point.

There certainly wont be the level of player interaction you can find if you join an established village, but if enough bay12ers get together, a community can form pretty fast. Like I said, i'm not going to be creating a bay12 village, but I can offer support for players starting up, as well as info and a (relatively) safe starting zone

I just sent you a PM. :) Would be great to get up there easier, than spending tons of time dealing with rivers and getting lost lol.

I had a tribe going at one point with my friends. There was quite a lot of us at one point, and I was the leader. We were pretty hardcore into it when we played years ago. I dunno if they'll be up for it again. They all kinda moved to their own things, so it'll probably be me and myself and I lol.

Maybe if I find a good area to make a base that I really like and wouldn't want to move from, I can start a B12 village up. Though, honestly, I dunno how much time I want to put into or can put into HnH. I played when I was in highschool, and had TONS of free time. So much free time lol. Me and my friends literally would play for so many hours a day. Can't really do that these days and I have a fiance now. And I like to play other games too these days instead of focusing on one. But we'll see. I'm a pretty good leader I guess, not the best, but not too bad. The only thing is if I have the time or want to put the time into running a village.

It would be awesome to get a B12 group going though for this, so if I can, I'll definitely try to start something up. But, at this point, its more 40% chance out of a 100 if that will happen or not.
