Haven and Hearth!
« on: November 12, 2016, 02:08:21 am »

Hey again folks, sorry if there's another thread but W12 happening on the 6th march apparently. Some people are unhappy with the changelog but we'll see how it goes.

World 12 -- March 06 2020

It's time yet again to throw your hat into the ring and test your luck against such iconic woodland creatures such as bears, wolves, moose, and russians.

Used to enjoy getting on there and making Brodgars every time the world reset. When it was 2D I still enjoyed it juuust enough to put up with the 4-chan-ish player base and the devs. 3D finally killed it for me I guess.

You were talking about some changes in the community. Did pay to play do anything in that regard? Is that still a thing?

I have played HaH several times over the years, but could never get into it.  Previously, yeah, the community sucked.  Anyone who was stronger than anyone else would kill you just to raid the resources on your corpse, and with the permadeath you'd lose everything.  That totally sucked.  If you were offline for more than a few hours before you could stake a claim, then you'd likely end up losing everything in your camp as well, which was just as bad.

Not to mention the sheer amount of time it took to do everything.  I like crafting and survival games, but theres a limit to how long I can sit there and stare at a screen while waiting for things to happen.  Oh, and lugging stuff around was horrendous.

The final off-put though was the cash shop.  Purchasing in-game silver for money in order to buy things needed to set up a house and whatnot was just crazy.  Especially with the risk of someone coming along to kill you afterwards to take the silver and whatever else you had bought.  Unless you were a bandit in a big group, you were basically screwed.

It's even worse when you're a solo player like myself who likes to dig into the meat of games.  I want to be able to get into everything~

Anyway, end of rant there.  Lol.  If I hear that HaH has gotten better, I may give it another go.

Yeah, pay to play changed. previously, free users had X amount of hours to play per week, with paying members having unlimited time. That was done away with entirely. In the current system, everyone has unlimited play time, with paying subscribers recieving about a 30% bonus on experience and LP gained.

For the most part, I would contribute the community shift to the age of the world, along with the kingdoms update. after the excitement and fun of the first few months, everything calms down alot. As for the kingdom update, each member of a kingdom gives a passive 'tax' of experience to the kingdom, so now large factions have a reason to protect the commoner, opposed to just raiding and ganking.

As i've said previously, a lot of mecahnisms that enabled raiding + murdering have been changed. walls cannot be bashed down by hand for instance. in fact, it takes about 24 RL hours for a wall to be bashed down, so raiders must be _very_ invested to get into your base.

As for the cash shop, there is none. You're thinking of Salem. Nothing in game except cosmetic hats can be bought with real currency.

Doh.  A Homer Simmon moment.  -.-;;  Okay, yeah, the cash shop thing was from Salem, my bad.  Then again, the original creator of Salem is the same as HaH, so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Anyway, that's good to know.  A 30% bonus may actually be worth getting a subscription for, so long as it isn't too expensive.  I don't make more than minimum wage around here.  Lol.  It has been a long while since I've given HaH a good look though, so I'll check it out again.

Oh, has there been any new developments with the client-side modding?  I remember there use to be a few third party clients available that made life a bit easier with extended map functions and whatnot.

Yes, there are still a lot of actively updated third party clients. I'm hesitant to link them in the OP however.
Amber Client - my client of choice
Ape Client
Ender Client
Purus Pasta Client

I can only vouch for amber client, it's pretty solid.

As for mapping, one of the most recent updates added a mapping tool to the original client, which was also pushed to the third party clients, so mapping has been made much, much easier

The kingdom update sounds interesting. I'd been waiting for a larger political entity in game than the village since the very beginning. I'll have to read up on it a bit.

Okay, so I'm going to give HaH another shot here in a little while.  If I dig the new way it works, I'll likely buy into a subscription and enjoy the perks of faster progress for a while.

Thanks, Ricky.

Also, I may be interested in actually joining a group.  Truth be told, MMO's are not really my forte, mostly because I don't have anyone to play with.  Being an antisocial loner in RL causes a great lack of inter-personal relationships, ya know.  Lol.

Well, I guess I'll try this and see if it runs okay on my laptop.

I think I had a brief go at playing it back in the day, before it got these weird/snazzy 3d graphics. Never really got into it, though. Probably because I joined an existing Bay12 village that was already well-established and there didn't seem to be much for me to do, haha.

Sure, let's try this thing. Australian timezone, and from the looks of it most of the players online in my zone are Russians. I give it a week before I get bored from lack of english speaking interaction.

Okay, I tried this thing.

First, the UI is horrible. Millions of counter-intuitive nested menus for accessing commands is awful game design. And this is from a Dwarf Fortress player.

Second, no tutorial mode. Sure, the game gives you goals, but there's absolutely no hints as to where to find the commands to do the stuff they want you to do.

Third, the movement seems to catch on every object in the path. Tree stump? Can't move. Rock? Can't move. Cliff? Yes, your character can climb down, but you have to click three times to get it to do it.

I'll pass on this one.

Blimey, that sounds awful. I couldn't even get the "Play" button to work, but now it sounds as though I was the lucky one, haha.
Still, I've gone to the trouble of downloading a client now, so I may as well give it a shot myself.

I'm a sucker for the masochistic experience of playing Bay12 HnH villages, if one actually gets established I might join next month once the holidays roll around.

Ricky linked a few guides and such at the end of the firstpost. They're worth a read.

Congratulations, you've addressed the three largest complaints of the game.

1) yeah, the UI is pretty bad, but that's simply how they wished to design the game. If it's any consolation, it's getting better. alternatively you could use third party client
2) yeah, there's no tutorial. I can think of another game that doesn't have a tutorial, however...
3) This problem is actually being actively addressed by the developers. when it will be fixed, i can't be sure, but a more robust pathfinding system will be put in place eventually.

I'm a sucker for the masochistic experience of playing Bay12 HnH villages, if one actually gets established I might join next month once the holidays roll around.

Currently, there are no active Bay12 Villages, and I dont really intend on starting one, but there are many active non-bay12 villages.
