One of my dwarves is a necromancer
« on: November 06, 2016, 11:11:39 am »

I've not seen this before, but one of my dwarves has after his profession, the word "necromancer". I assume this has happened because he's a necromancer... but I had no idea they could just migrate into your fortress. It could be a feature of DFHack that this is showing?

Is it dangerous to leave him roaming the fortress unsupervised? The wiki says they can be dangerous since they will raise undead that can be hostile to your dwarves, is that accurate?

Since he doesn't need to eat or sleep, I should be able to imprison him and use him like a vampire to pull levers and whatnot, I expect? He came with record keeping skill, so I could make him my bookkeeper too.

The wiki also says that they can have their slabs in hand, but mine doesn't.

necromancers ARE very dangerous, they have the [OPPOSED_TO_LIFE] tag which makes it so that undead and anything else that has the [OPPOSED_TO_LIFE] tag will not attack them, but a necromancer will only raise dead in combat, so as long as he dosnt get into a fight he isnt an immediate threat.

get him somewhere safe and far away from the rest of your dwarves, and either seal him up or arrange an unfortunate accident

Make a hidden library tucked away in the depths of your fortress, toss him in, and lock the door. The only things that enter from that point on should be empty quires, books, and scrolls. If you're already planning on just locking him up, at least let him do what he loves and be doomed to record and write for all of eternity.

You should turn him into a warrior poet. Make him part of a one man unit equipped with the finest armor. Then let him spend all his time in either a library or a danger room. He could be your champion! And of course he could write books that would allow you to have a legitimate necromancer fortress!

Or do whatever you want with him, you have a unique situation so have fun!
Also, any chance you could post a copy of your save so I can have fun with it too? I have always wanted to try and convert a Fort over to necromancy ^_^

This is the world gen information if you want to generate it yourself, perhaps he'll turn up for you too :)

A necromancer will only raise bodies if two conditions are met:
- In combat (or otherwise threatened to defend himself); and
- There are dead bodies around to be raised.

Needless to say, refuse hauling is a dangerous thing for your fortress to have on a necromancer, and you should probably keep it away from a booze serving tavern as well, but otherwise it ought to be reasonably safe to burrow the bugger somewhere in the safe depths of your fortress UNTIL YOU ENABLE A CIVILIAN ALERT, at which time the civ alert burrow will let him out (but if you've got work, temple, library, and tavern nearby there shouldn't be any reason to leave the area anyway, except a need to wander...).

Question: what if you get a goblin siege? Will him raise dead goblins to fight for him? Or will the zombies attack you instead?

Any rejections on that worldgen? If so, what platform?

Also, wondering about his name and legends record before moving to your fortress. This is first time I hear of necromancer arriving as migrant, usually I'd expect a visitor or invader.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The newly raised zombies will be opposed to all life, attempting to kill Goblins and Dwarfs alike (except the necromancer of course).

Elaborating on kingsableye's answer: They'll sort of fight for HIM against all other life (which does not exclude the necro's buddies). However, necro raised undead are currently not controlled by the necro. Once raised they'll attack anything living that isn't a necro.
Black tower sieges often contain a living handler (which doesn't have to be a necro) and the undead mill around that handler, so if the handler is capable of finding the fortress (which seems to work better in the current releases than in 0.40.24) the undead will sort of follow when they do not detect something living to chase. I don't know if necro raised undead will mill around and follow the necro in the absence of targets, though.

It should also be noted that if all of your dwarves are necromancers, the zombies won't be a problem.

Is this true? I thought that as well as being opposed to life zombies tended to attack each others masters?

So,
If "all your dwarves = 1 necromancer" is true,
Then Necromancer Fortress is also true :P :D

Until migrants arrive.

Maybe you can get your necromancer to write a book containing the secrets of life and death.
