Issues with dead animals and items not being hauled
« on: November 06, 2016, 07:11:09 am »

After titan bringing lot's of fun to my fortress I had to put many dwarfs into tiny boxes.

However after this mess and everyone being burried, I still have a lot cloth lying on the ground and also dead dogs. now I tried to mark them as dump, yet they don't get brought to the garbage dump. I also claimed some cloth and bolts used and activated via o F and made t and p allowed, but most dwrafs even if all have hauling enabled hang around in the temple or have "no job".

so what to fix this? did I forgot soemthig else I need to set? but they actually did brought some of these cloth to the dump, yet suddenly just stopped doing so after some of the cloth.

You probably know this, but orders forbidding checking only applies for drops after that point - things dropped before will remain as they are. Use d-b-c to mass-reclaim if they're forbidden.

Double-check that the stuff in question isn't forbidden. Items can have both the "D"ump and "F"orbidden tag at the same time, which results in your dwarves doing exactly nothing with them since they're marked for dumping, but dwarves won't touch anything that's forbidden.

Also, note that changing the "o"rders concerning forbidden items won't work retroactively. Affected items (corpses and their inventory, for example) are marked forbidden (or not) upon the moment of death and will not be un-forbidden by changing the orders. You have to reclaim them yourself.

And the standard thing to check is having forgotten to disable the civilian alert, but then I get a lot of cancellation spam. And, of course, don't forget to lower the drawbridges (yes, I've forgotten that at times).

stuff looks like this
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
so access is there they are on claim, some are marked for dumping some not. But no matter how I change the claim or dump values they simply don't touch the stuff or the dead dogs.

Well, the items on your screenshot sure aren't forbidden, so that's not the problem.

A few more things to try:

- is your garbage dump zone active? Use the zone menu ("i") to check. At the bottom of the list of zone designations, you can change between active and inactive using "a". No active zone, no dumping.
- is there an open path to the zone? No locked doors, trees blocking the way or anything?

Apart from that and checking for burrow restrictions/civilian alert, as was already mentioned, I'm out of ideas.

When it comes to the dogs, I believe the optiions-refuse hauling has to be changed from the default to haul those if outside. Similar to the dump zone, the refuse stockpile will have to take from anywhere and be accessible, in addition to not being full.

All garbage dumping falls under "refuse"; you need to enable outside refuse hauling in the standing orders menu and ensure your dwarves have refuse hauling enabled.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
thats how it loosk, the garbage dump is partially over open air (whch works, as my dwarfs do throw stuff into the river that way)

I now even placed a second garbage dump to see if the partial open space overhang is an issue but they simply don't touch the stuff

Dwarves default to not taking garbage from outside, only underground garbage. Change it in the 'o'rders screen, under refuse. People here have mentioned that but you have not said whether you have taken this important step. Also mentioned: you will need to issue new orders to dump after changing default refuse orders. Make sure you've done that, and mention if you have so people will know you have tried that!

ok thank you for stating this again, it's still very confusing because there is a REFUSE stockpile, and the GARBAGE DUMP is for DUMPED items, yet the REFUSE menu saying gather outsid REFUSE not DUMPING outside items.

Yes, it is confusing, the terminology could be much clearer: it means BOTH outside dumping and regular refuse hauling.

"Garbage" is a synonym for "refuse"; giving two different things the same name would likely be equally confusing (see animal training vs. animal training, for instance). "Garbage dumping" is directly tied to refuse handling (the standing order "refuse" menu lets you change from stockpiling refuse to automatically dumping refuse in a "garbage dump"). Players have, however, co-opted garbage dumping as a versatile way to get dwarves to move specific things that are not refuse, which makes the link to refuse handling much less obvious.

That being said, the default standing order to ignore refuse outside seems to cause an inordinate number of problems and should probably be changed. Players could still have trouble if they toggled the refuse options, or disabled refuse hauling, etc., but with the primary catalyst gone the number of "garbage dumping issues" would surely decrease.

it would be sufficient when marking a item as claim or dump would makes dwarfs not ignore them as the refuse options is a global setting and the other one is actively done by the player, so that should already overwrite the global settings for this specific item

Unless you changed the refuse standing orders, *all* items marked for dumping were "player marked", so you've effectively removed dumping from the "outside refuse" option.
