Yeah this is a fun game, I've been playing with a few of my buddies already. Right now I'm kinda grinding some of the duel games to get the exploit weapons. Yes, its called 'exploit' for some reason.

I always fucking hated Dynasty Warriors for the troops being useful for nothing except dying, so this has got me really excited.

So World of Romance of the Three Kingdoms & Blade?

Sounds interesting... kind of wish it was more Mount & Blade in presentation though. And I wonder, does it have female generals or soldiers?

Not yet, although I have seen female adjutants in game I have no idea how you would purchase them, but at least it shows they're in the game files.

The option to make a female general is greyed out, so they obviously hope for it to be in later.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Apparently there's a roman faction coming, like, eventually?

Anyway, I've been playing it, eh. The grind seems. Like, a lot. Maybe I'm missing something but at like 90 stars per game it's. Going to take forever to just get the second troop upgrade (although I could do the training missions to get most of it) and I can only assume it continues to slow down after that. Also the game seems dead, at least in the 5v5 servers, which I often get only like, one guy with me and eight AIs. The dueling server on the other hand has lots of dudes, but if I wanted to play a cancerous mount and blade dueling event, I'd go and play mount and blade. Maybe at higher levels more people play? Idk.

what's the point of the DLC packages? is it one of those situations where "this is advisable but not strictly required" or more like "purely cosmetic" or ?

Gives some currency, premium time (faster currency + xp gain) and a few items (One has a new officer)

Not cosmetic (for the most part), and not needed, just helps get you to the higher-tiered equipment faster.

The stars are called Prestige, and they're like gold experience you can get in World of Tanks, you can use them to unlock stuff on any troop. Your troops also get regular Experience, and they get about ten times as much of that as you get prestige. You can see it on their card on the upgrade screen. Also, prestige is required to unlock new Adjutants, so it's probably best saved for that.
