Been playing this for the last few days non-stop. The combat is pretty good, maybe even better than M&B. Damage is location specific and armor covers various different areas with cloth/leather/metal defense which is good against blunt/slash/pierce in varying amounts. You need to hit them with the actual dangerous part of the weapon...hit them with the wooden park of your pike and you'll do almost no damage. You NEED to hit them with the pointy end.

Progression is pretty much identical to World of Tanks, except you level troops instead of tanks, and you can outfit your general with any gear your troops have unlocked. Currently the three lines of troop are Wei Heavy Pikemen and Cavalry, Shu Skirmisher Shield Infantry (the weakest unit by far compared to Wei and Wu) / Horse crossbowmen, and Wu Sailors 2h chopper infantry / Wu Foot Archers. I've mostly played Wei Pike and Wu 2hers and while the pikes are really strong as long as you can position the front of the formation (yes you get sub-generals with all kind of formations!) the Wu 2hers slaughter anything that they can close with and flank.

There is 4 main game modes right now... Commander mode where 5v5 players command a troop to kill the other players or their marshal. Siege mode where one team attacks while the other defends, with their troops making it pretty big fights at gates and such...boiling oil and catapults are player man-able and can make a huge difference in battle. Duel mode which is up to 15v15 general only fight, team deathmatch style. Finally there is a PVE battle, with three unlockable parts once you have high enough level troops to take with you. I've only got to finish normal mode which ends with you defeating Lu Bu in a 5v1 battle, and he is no push-over.

It is really fun to play with friends compared to solo, although you do get a matchmaking penalty that is pretty obvious if you team up.

Was surprised there was no thread on this one so I went ahead and made one, hope to see some friends start playing so we can form a team!  :)

You had me at "Mount & Blade."

Going to look into this. I'm bad at strategy, but love M&B combat.

E: Funny, I recognize this by the game banner thing on Steam but I never really thought to click on it.

Combat looks solid enough...but is it all just instanced battles? No sandbox or campaign?

Yeah it is all matches, no campaign or sandbox. Pretty much the same style as world of tanks, with the matchmaking. There is another game mode coming, but there isn't any info on it yet. It probably wouldn't be a sandbox though, but something to do with either ladder play or guild vs guild campaign like world of tanks has.

Yeah I've been addicted to it the past few days, it's a pretty fun solid game that's still in EA but seems to be actively developed. No real P2W elements besides faster progression, it is a bit grindy however it is pretty fun and there is tangible process, the grind only slows down when you start getting long losing streaks of matches which can happen. It is very team dependent, which can be both good and bad, where how well your team coordinates and sticks together usually decide the match. Should also mention that it seems the Romans are a WIP, it probably will clash with the Three Kingdoms theme but hey, Romans and more unit variety. Can't really argue with that.

Okay, first impressions after doing the tutorials. A lot of this is shamelessly cut and paste from Mount & Blade... and I'm pretty okay with that. Pretty sure when I shot someone with an arrow it even made the same 'thunk' hit confirmation.

The translations are odd but I can at least figure out what's going on. I probably would have preferred some of these English voiceovers to be in Chinese with subtitles like in the intro sequence, but that's just me.

I'm at character creation now, and it's asking me to pick a side. I'm automatically tempted to go Shu just because I'm a sucker for most things green, but I'm not sure how much of an impact it'll have on gameplay...

(Oh, not being able to rebind certain keys is kinda annoying, I never have spacebar as my jump key...)

First, go Wei Infantry or Wu Infantry. You can do everything eventually both those two lines are the strongest right now.

Second, Get Han Hao Adjutant ASAP for his formation, intensive square. This will make the difference in early battles against people who don't know about formations. Use F4 to change your men into the actual formation...they start in disarray.

Third, Get a long pike/spear and a shield/1h weapon. Poke from distance while behind your troops and try to get attacks of opportunity on enemy generals not paying attention. If one rushes for you, switch to shield/1h because a pike is not effective up close.

Fourth, If the match is close and all your troops are dead you and your teammates can retreat to your camp and you can hire more troops. The amount available goes up 1 per minute and starts at a variable number based on battle tier. Should have the guy with the most tanky infantry recruit first and all the generals should support those infantry as best they can.

Fifth, You can get a TON of free gold, about 50$ worth just by getting honor points from medals. Click your General Portrait and then go to achievements to browse the medals. On the right side is a list of the rewards and you have to manually press receive once you earn them to get the gold.

Your faction does not matter at all, it's just starter equipment. Secondly, I recommend going into troop cards you do not have yet and get a feel for the gear you want and work towards unlocking said troops. For example, the first decent 1 handed sword is from an archer, the best pikes are from wei while niche weapons such as 1 handed and 2 handed axes are in the shu? (not sure, don't have the game open at the moment) infantry line. Every faction has their specialty, however your faction does not matter hugely and it's completely possible to mix and match different factions for your preferred armour for maximum coverage, and weapons. Secondly I do highly recommend playing the duelling mode, both because it's fun and zany like M&B multiplayer (pike spam all day everyday), and also you can exchange the ribbons you get from duelling to get fairly good gear that is on par with Tier 3 or even higher gear.

I did a bunch of the training and it's easy and gave a lot of free XP and money, and also (very awkwardly) taught me the difference between the three armors and attack types.

So I unlocked Han Hao for that formation, but I have no idea how to use it. I hit F4 and it looks like it pops up, but then it disappears. What do I have to do to actually activate it when it's selected?

Keep pressing F4 until your desired formation is selected. For a split second your adjutant/commander helper thing will say "Okay troops do this formation etc." and if you stand still a sec you'll notice your troops will move in front of you and assume that formation.

Was playing last night - lots of fun, but I'm pretty mediocre :P

Unlocked the Wu Mountain Bowmen to start, I like they're WoT-like artillery ability to reign down pointy arrows from afar :)

Archers are fun.  I get a shield on myself and a group of good archers, then I tell them to defend an area while I go in close.  Everything aggros on me and can't hurt my shield, while my archers rain death on them!

Haven't unlocked much in the way of good equipment yet, my shield is little more than a few boards stuck together.

What sort of bowmen are you rocking?
