Desura Revival

So, apparently Desura is coming back.

Any bets on how long it'll last this time?

I never even knew Desura left.

Were there any notable Desura games that weren't already somewhere else?

Off topic, but

OnePlay started up in its current format back in 2008, where we sold pc games, and had a physical rental business.

Starting up a physical PC games rental store in 2008, oh dear. That's doomed to fail on like 3 different levels.

Nothing really big comes to mind, their main gimmick was selling small name indie titles.

Any notable exclusives they did have have likely jumped ship at this point though.

You knew they were doomed back in the day when almost every game sold on there would usually offer you a Steam or GoG key as well. Literally going "We know you don't actually want to use this platform".

The big thing I care about are the dom4 forums. For a while those were the official ish ones there. Quite a few strategy guides and discussions came from there before the steam forums became their official ones. But yeah, if you want to do anything, itch.io likely does what Desura used to assuming you couldn't steam early access. With it being kicked up again, maybe they can settle past debts with game developers and then move on to courting people that couldn't make it to steam, or would rather not release on steam for the time being while letting them have a community that is not reddit or whatever. Think you could pull off something usable, but we'll see if they actually do so. Since all I know about the parent company is their rental business this could be the last saving throw of a company spiraling to bankruptcy. But at the very least a digital game distribution system to hook onto is more sensible than what blockbuster was doing.

Didn't GameStop buy out Desura before it went into the tank? Or am I thinking of Impulse?

GameStop bought Impulse, and GameStop still exists and so does Impulse (under a different name) - I can still download shit from "Gamestop Now" that I got on Impulse when Stardock owned it. (The only thing I care about being SotS)

I have doubts about this revival.
In the end of Desura, they stopped paying developers their shares of the game sales. and I don't think anybody wants to pay back those just to get the "Desura" name back. So developers may not want to be on this new Desura platform. Without games, there won't be many players.

Of course, it doesn't mean that there won't be any games there, but it would seem normal for some editors not to want to get there.

It's a sticky issue, but I'm sure that at the very least it comes with some infrastructure in hardware and software. If they could pay developers back it'd basically be like buying an ad in so far as there might be some coverage. Or they can try and cheap out. Mostly the devs that were on there deserve their backpay at the very least. But I can also imagine them trying to broker a deal where they only pay back some of what desura owed and the ensuing bad publicity that would generate. Personal expectation of this would be ineffectual flopping around though. I dunno how often it is that a business showing up this late to the party tends to have people aware of the market realities of online distribution well enough to be really effective. I mean, if they knew it or had someone that knew it well, and they were around for 8 years, then they should already be in the digital distribution market.

edit: also finally looked at the oneplay website. I dunno what about it but it has that sorta design that makes me think "man that looks really sketchy".

Yeah, I absolutely have no confidence in OnePlay. I expect they'll be bought out by some data mining consortium within a few years in order to get a hold of people's email addresses and buying habits.
