WestWorld (TV show) Season 2
« on: October 23, 2016, 12:40:20 pm »

These violent delights have violent ends

Anyone watching this?

To summarize the show, it's a Scifi Western film, and the plotline is Jurassic Park but with artificial humans, adapted off of a Film franchise by the same name that took a less 2deep4u philosophical take. The twist is that while it's Jurassic Park from the point of view of the human characters, it's Groundhog Day hell from the point of view of the robit characters.

Pros:
  • Western genre but ROBOTS
  • The actors at their best are really good
  • It's neat to see the writers trying to figure out why people make films, literature, vidya gaems, and how people consume them
  • Focus on the perspective of the robits makes for some dank sci fi shit
  • Minor human characters and minor robit characters are the stars of the show

Cons:
  • Writing repeatedly slaps its wang in your face in terms of subtlety
  • Repeatedly
  • Some of the human characters are just rubbish, either boring or just ~quiiiiiirky~. Not the same as glitching robits though
  • Not cowboys and aliens
  • No Western music, only covers
  • Behind the facade of 2deep4u is HBO: the show: death and sex, the edginess. It gets repetitive very quickly, as the story is very slow to unfold (3 episodes/weeks in and it's still all foreshadowing). As a result you often get these fast paced exciting scenes where lots of stuff happens, then it slows to a crawl with everyone reading from their philosophy textbooks.
  • For what it's worth, the philosophy is shallow, but they make some decent use of it. To the extent you could say decent use of a puddle.

All in all I would recommend it thus far, for as long as you're fine with edgyyyy 2deep4u, the show provides an enjoyable experience. The running joke where James Marsden dies in every episode also gets a sensible chuckle too

Yeah, his voice acting is really special, too bad nobody stole him for more roles, sure its typecasting but hes good for it.
Got the look too.
Alot of the actors in this are too... clean for my opinion, my side ain't chosen, my side was given.

The premise is interesting but most of what I've seen/read of the show looks pretty dreadful.
Maybe it'll turn up on Netflix at some point and I'll give it a watch... doesn't seem like something I'd bother watching if it required any more effort than that. Unless friends start getting into it and badgering me about how good it is or something, I guess.

I like it. Pretty much a good pros and cons summary in the op.

So far what annoys me the most is how they keep moving the robots back and forth between the labs and the park between scenes without any time passing.

I love this show.

Although from two OG grandpas of the show I like Anthony Hopkins more.

Heard lots of good things about it, haven't touched it yet. I'll prob end up letting it develop more and more and then just get all of it and watch it all in a few days, kinda like I did with game of thrones.

Is part of the point that no time is noticed as having passed from the robot point of view? From the human point of view the characters talk of being away from home for quite a while, but for the robots only days have passed

You will never be as edgy as Ed Harris
Speaking of, I watched the Westworld film just now, the man in black is a very different character. Also hahah, I am just noticing easter eggs now, like them displaying one of the antagonists from the film in the TV show. I have the distinct impression though that this is not a TV film reboot, but a TV sequel - edgy man in black seems more like a human who was present during some major fuckup (so basically he gets the all-star treatment, same way a plane crash survivor might get offered unlimited air travel or something)

Really enjoying this so far. For any flaws it has, it's still exploring some very interesting areas and I'm really intrigued as to where it is all going. And I'm pretty good at ignoring flaws in stuff while I watch it, makes TV more enjoyable.

My only real fear is that the writers are going to outsmart themselves and we'll end up with a terrible ending because they can't figure out what to do with it all. Hopefully they were smart enough to have a good ending in mind at the start and are writing their way there.

You know, for all the money the customers put into WestWorld and all the thought the directors and such put into it, why on Earth did they not think to separate minmaxing metagamers from the neckbeard roleplayers? Seems like a really, really silly oversight. They could schedule black hats and white hats at different times, have two resorts (akin to having two servers) or they could just have certain areas be RP and other areas be PvE (or even PvP). I swear they're gonna find Arnold and he's just gonna be the equivalent of the guy who wanted to escape life and become the vidya
