The dwarves want lots of food; I wanted to know if we can pay, or if it can be paid in parcels to avoid straining our food supply.

"We accpet this idea. Once a year, in late autumn, for the next 21 years, you will pay us in food. If you increase it to the next 25 years, we'll include a special crown as well. So, whaddya say?

"Special crown? That would be interesting, if it were to have an enchantment of authority in it. ((Diplomacy bonus?))

Twenty-five parcels to be paid then, and we'll pay one every year - except if we're at risk of famine, in which case we'll push back the payments as if that year didn't happen and include another half year's worth as interest at the end. Is this agreeable?"

The dwarves agree to the terms, and waddle away, saying that they shall have the weapons in a few nonths, since dwarven smithing takes time.

As winter comes in, the Hrelden folk have ceased to war entirely. Whether this is a good sign or not, you cannot twll, since the spies cannot be reached in this years storms.

You are walking in the gardens of the castle, when all of a sudden you look up, and  see the guards being stabbed. Before you can do anything, an assasin leaps down and takes a stab at you.

However, the secret police arrive almost immediately and take you to the temple of the lord to get you healed, as well as taking the assasin to be interrogated.

You wake up later, after extensive healing. All of your advisors are here, telling you that you need to do something about your personal security.
Do you do anything?

Form a Royal Guards Regiment.

Make sure it can't become a treasonous Praetorian or Janissary guard: it'll be some extra work, but their fealty must be to the King, not to the regiment.

(Extra fluff:
They'll have extra pay, fancy uniforms with the royal arms, and the pride of being an elite troop under direct Royal command. However, only decorated soldiers with more than five years experience, or ten years for officers, clean sheets and their superiors' letters of recommendation can even apply to be screened by the Spy Master and gruellingly tested in body and mind by the meanest Sergeants we can dig out of hell; it must be hard enough to make four out of five drop out (or even die), but even those who drop out get a decoration to prevent any stigma.
If they're finally accepted, they are sworn in - not by an officer, or even their commander, but by the King in person, so they'll always remember where there fealty lies.)

Soon afterwards, the royal guard is formed, for extreme veterans only. Any traitors found inside of said guard are to be excecuted without mercy. Is is soon full of experts and veterans who swear an oath to none but the king of Eldrathion.

Winter passes slowly, but peacefully.

An advisor comes forward one day.

"Your highness, gold has been discovered in the Dragonscale mountains. Shall we gpbegin extraction?"

"A find of gold? That should be wonderful news, so... is there a reason for you to ask instead of going right ahead with the mining?"

It is dangerous and costly. The dragonscale mountains are treachurous, and until we can build proper lodgings, it will be hard to get going.

[Maegil]

"Start mining, and use part of the proceedings to build infrastructure. Since we're at it, if our budget permits start building a road across the mountains so winters won't paralyse trading or troop movement between the coasts, and at least a couple of forts so enemies can't do the same."
