I've played wow, but I wasn't impressed! I'm just not in for the long-term social aspect of the game as much as other people.
Given that my first mmo was Runescape, and that felt great.
It felt quirky and new, as one of the few mmo's with a detailed quest system.
It's one of the less social mmo's since most things are not a group activity. You'd talk to people to get information about what is nearby while exploring Lumbridge and other areas.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of new group things since the advent of Runescape 2 (A major engine/graphics overhaul)
Though to be honest the game is still less graphically detailed than Wizardry 8 even with Runescape 3.
I used to love the feeling of completing quests, and level ups.
Unfortunately the new quests don't appeal quite as much, and I maxed my ranged combat level.
My favorite pvp ever is the original guild wars.
In guild wars (1) you unlock skills from campaign mode or in random arena. You use these skills to make a 'build'. You also have stats that determine how effective your skills are, and items that boost your stats. These are also a part of your build. There is a level/equipement/skills cap and you only can choose 8 skills. What you unlocked to wear, attribute, and put in your skill slots mean life or death in random arena.
Your goal, in pvp, is to find the correct build to survive, and in doing so, kill the enemy team. Fairly standard.
The sheer variety and metagame are worth hundreds of hours of sunk gameplay and build making.
Oh yea, you get 8 skill slots that are used to fight your enemies, from the standard resurrection signet, throwing magic or swinging weapons at your enemies.
These resemble skills from world of warcraft or league of legends
Most skills do damage or heal, some interrupt or knockdown your enemies.
In random arena, you are pitted in a 4v4 against an enemy team. All players are randomly chosen from whoever happens to be playing, or from previous winners still grouped.
Your goal is to kill the enemy team and survive.
You can play using the same perspective as quake, although I've spent a long time staring at my elementalist's backside. (just use the scroll wheel to adjust the POV)
Unfortunately the game no longer produces expansions, and is superseded by Guild Wars 2, which no longer has the same super-appealing build system.
