Marshes and swamps! Air more than moist enough for their hydration and quite a bit of clay and peat for pottery and ceramics! Also many plants for poisons and herbs!

Mangrove swamp, in particular, for their general inhospitability.

and little Marsh Rabbits to chase down and eat.
And strange herbs for alchemy.

You find a perfect place for your children to start their lives.
A marsh, close to a river, with the moisture needed for their watery bodies, and vegetation to feed them.
You spawn eight snail people as the starting population.

Your newly-created folk awake to life, already adult. But the place is wild and is untame.

What will they do first?

As your snail people didn't yet get consciousness of your existence, you can only watch them start their lives.

It seems they started digging down, building a circular claustral chamber scant metres below the ground.
One of them decided to explore the area around, while another, more hungry, went to inspect nearby bushes.

As they worked, you noticed they started vocalizing at each other, a dabbling language maybe?

What are they up to now?

A good idea would be to dig a tunnel all the way till the lake, but not breach the wall so that the nest has moisture and they could also drink without going out.
