After reading this thread, I decided I'd reconnect with my alcoholic parent, who my other siblings have given up on, and try to give her a second chance after she tried to hurt my brother last year. She says she's changed, and she sounded sincere over the phone, so we're going out to lunch on the 17th.

I'm thinking Space Engineers, since I've heard lots of good things about it and the people on the Bay12 Discord server seem to enjoy playing it.

I saw a homeless person in the street near my house who was homeless and needed a ride to a local gas station. I picked up her stuff and walked down to the gas station with her, gave her a dollar for a drink and shared a cigarette with her, and from there I walked home. So, that's my good deed but I already have so many games I don't need any more. So if I qualify on this one I'm passing it on to the next poster that wants to claim a game, if that's okay.

I volunteered at a local school for the past year and read books with two boys who had/have trouble reading (3rd grade). They could choose the book from a couple I had gotten from the library. After reading something else at first one settled for "The Magic Treehouse" series (which I found boring, but I probably would have read it as a kid as well), the other actually chose Astrid Lindgren's "Mio, my son", a book that I loved then and now. (Seeing the English title for the first time is weird, because it misses the repetition that is a big part of the writing style.)
Now they are 4th grade and don't have enough time anymore, because it is the last year of primary school here.

If I get a game I would love Qvadriga.

That's wonderful! I think we're sticking to a one-game-per-person policy for now - but sharing is always encouraged, and at some point we're likely letting folks get more games

Haha, getting too many games is what made us get into this mess in the first place! My execute control was down today, so I did buy one (Football Tactics, 20% off, but I love supporting awesome tactics games). Sigh!

there is this girl I met five years ago through the interwebz, and we developed a mutual crush while being pen-pals. We had the chance to date, but given that she lived (and still lives) in another city, she was afraid to engage or get into some sort of commitment, and I was kind of a terrible person at the time, so a relationship on that order never sorted out.
Two years after we attempted dating, she met a guy and fell in love with him, and we have been friends ever since (not with the guy, I'm sure he doesn't trust me).

Recently she has been really stressed with the available jobs at her city, and the lack of opportunities that the place had to offer, besides the fact that she suffers from depression and has a rather complex slate of mental illness running through her family, so I voluntereed to help her get a scholarship out of the country. We found something interesting in her field at Chile, so I encouraged her to apply for the scholarship and helped the cause with a sizeable chunk of paperwork that had to be done here (given that she was unable to travel to my city).

Helping her with stuff (proofreading the essays and the letters she had to send to Chile) was almost a full-time job, so I didn't get a proper 9-to-5 one until I made sure she was already committed with the scholarship. She's still with her boyfriend, which hurts a bit (because I really like her, even with all the attendant quirks and manias she has) and she will eventually leave the country at the beginning of 2017, but I'm glad really glad the girl is pursuing her dreams once again.

That's super heartwarming. One of the most difficult things in love/crushes is learning and committing to letting go. That's true especially if there are still feelings and some sort of relationship, like friendship involved. I am so happy and proud you found it in yourself to do the things you did <3

I came out as trans to my parents (it went fine!). I would describe myself as semi-closeted at the moment. Prior to telling my parents I only ever told people when it was contextually relevant.

That's awesome! Go you, and go your parents! Being out and involved is super powerful too - thanks a ton for doing this! I have a couple of identities I'm largely closeted about because people have tended to go "after" my cherished ones and insist on making them feel bad. Hate them closets, but it's a choice that I think makes a lot of sense right now. Keeping that in mind for the US's National Coming Out Day (tomorrow!).

Choosing to stay quiet about a part of yourself in certain sections of your life is a judgement call that shouldn`t be stigmatized. I think you would have to group me into the "anti-choice" group, because I don't believe abortions should be legal. Almost all of abortions are done for birth control, when if the women just used proper birth control and safe sex (or just didn't sleep around with everyone... have seen married women who wanted kids getting abortions solely because they didn't know who the father was) to begin with they wouldn't need abortions. Then you have those who are basically practicing eugenics, killing children because they think something might be wrong with them - a risk of down's syndrome or some other possible complication, which the tests for aren't even completely accurate.

Babies have their own heartbeat, a separate blood supply, and already look like tiny humans even at the early stages that most abortions are performed. By the time many of them are aborted (20-24 weeks) they look just like tiny humans and in many cases could survive outside the womb with medical care. I have been in the NICU with one of my sons, and while there have seen the tiniest babies struggling to live. They looked no different from the pictures and videos I have seen of babies torn limb from limb in abortions. I have friends who actually survived abortion attempts on them and came out scarred - mentally and physically. I just don't see how anyone could consider these "fetuses" (dictionary definition: an unborn human baby) anything less than human. The only difference between them and the other babies struggling to live are their parents. In one case, the parent wants them and fights for their life. In the other, the parent doesn't want the inconvenience of them and pays someone to kill them.

This isn't the first time in history that a culture has called humans less than human for the sake of convenience. America dehumanized the Japanese during the war and put them in camps. Germany dehumanized the Jews and slaughtered them. Blacks were deemed less than human in an effort to justify slavery and treating them like animals. All cultures at one time have dehumanized other humans to justify treating them as less than human. Babies just aren't convenient sometimes, and our culture is all about sex without consequences - hence the popularity of the term "fetus" and so many people saying that they aren't human just because of their age. As soon as sperm meets egg, new unique DNA is created and a new unique human being starts to grow.

The person sitting beside me at a lecture had a bad headache, so the person beside him gave him a tablet. I thought that was nice, so when it turned out he hadn't brought his wallet and couldn't buy himself a drink to wash it down, I bought him a drink. Then we sat and talked about metal bands and Vikings, which was fun.
Not sure if that counts, as it was a pretty small gesture, but hey.

Under 2% of abortions are done after 20 weeks, and there are some pretty strong restrictions on whether you can have them. I know that I would not be able to provide a child with Down's Syndrome with a happy life. I wouldn't. I'd be miserable, and consequently, they'd be miserable. I'd rather avoid bringing a life condemned to unhappiness into the world. Similarly, some conditions that entail suffering and premature death can only be diagnosed after 20 weeks.

And despite them being really emotionally effective, I try to avoid arguments that "they look just like humans". I mean, they do, but if the fetus is unaware of its own existence and unable to feel pain, then that is a stronger argument for me.

I think we're just gonna have to agree to disagree, especially with the aptness of the comparison with WW2 propaganda


I'm not saying folks don't abuse abortion. They certainly do. I know some folks who'd get pregnant every summer so they didn't have to deal with periods during beach season. Even to me, that's just... ew. The cases you mentioned are also pretty terrible. So much for folks being honest... I'm not going to start a debate on wives with boyfriends, since I have some problems with monogamy being considered the only ethical/moral/natural choice.

But I will say this: I've had family members who were monogamous and had taken extreme care with contraception, and they got pregnant. An IUD got dislodged, a condom broke, antibiotics interfered with the pill... truth is, sometimes you get pregnant even when you've taken all precautions. I don't believe that's the case for everyone (or even the majority?) of folks going in for abortions, which is why I'm all for really comprehensive sex ed!
