The Mead Hall: Songs, Tales, Poems, and everything else.
« on: October 08, 2016, 03:11:51 am »

So, something I have not seen yet, is a thread where the person writes poems, songs, tales ect. So, here's the first one, about the most intresting dwarf in the world.

His name is Morul
He is legendary in all things
He gives people high moral
Because he can kill everything.

He will keep you protected
In day and night
A statue should be erected
For he destroyed the orc blight.

Soapmaker, Farmer,
Axedwarf, Marksdwarf,
Cheesemaker, Hauler,
Macedwarf, Hammerdwarf.

All of these he is,
The Most intresting dwarf in the world,
Unmatched in countless skills,
He is only matched in how he hurls.

So, what do you guys think? It's actually pretty hard to write something like a poem, because you have to make sure it sounds right. I will probabally do these daily. Also keep in mind that they won't all be poems and songs, as it sais in the title. I will occasionly post small stories that I think are ok on here, and a bunch of other stuff. Hope you enjoy  ;)

I like it. Great idea.
Here's a little something that I just made up, inspired by this thread.

The fortress of stone
Under the deep earth
A lake of roiling magma
Brought forth by dwarf

To forge the steel
Would bring an end
To forgotten beasts
And goblin men

The smelters sweat
The forges hammer
Swords and axes
Of dwarven glamour

Steel hued bolts
And glinting mail
To turn the tide
Of battle's hail

Against titans
And dragon foe
We dwarves go marching
To war we go

(The depths of the earth)
(The hammers sing)
(Molten metal)
(Magma glowing)

(The dead of night)
(Beneath the earth)
(Is the same as day)
(For those of dwarven birth)

(Let this be our last battle)
(The final war for us)
(We put our faith in each other)
(And in sword and shield we trust)

(Titans shatter stone)
(Dragons scorch all wood)
(Rare is the dwarf from the heart of the earth)
(Who wouldn't fight it if he could)

(Go brave Urist, to war)
(Fight like never before)
(Protect the mountain hame)
(For peace forever more)

"Hame" is an old-y word for "Home". I think it's mentioned in DF as well (I may be wrong).

I really like all of your well-thought out highbrow poetry, no sarcasm.

However, here's something more likely to be overheard in a tavern full of drunken bearded maniacs. I think it goes under "everything else".

There was a dwarf from Icebucket
Who hated a fellow named Thokit.
And they got in a fight,
Though it didn't seem right,
Where he told that dwarf he could stuff it.

Thank you.

Well, in this I am using the theory the the players are the actual gods, (which we basically are.) so you technically just called yourself a drunken bastard.  ;D The reason i am saying it is the hall of gods, and using this specific theory, is obvious.

Technically I cannot refute your assessment. :3

The Sun Sets on Fortresses is an example of The Amethyst Strategy.

The Amethyst Strategy is a poetic riddle, originating in the Ivory Empires.  The poem is a single tercet (3 lines).  Each line has 7 syllables.  Every line has a terminal caesura (pause, usually in the middle of the line -- I'm going to interpret "terminal causura" to mean a full stop in the middle of the line, rather than a pause at the end of the line, because it sounds more interesting to me).  The rhyme scheme of the poem is AAB.  [Lots of other stuff deleted because I don't feel like typing it, but you get the idea].

Code: [Select]
      Fortresses.  The days flew by
  with dwarfs moving mountains.  Why
      does my wife assign cleaning?

Not really a riddle, I'm afraid.  I'll try to do better next time.

Quote
Facepalm1: Hmmm, I wonder what wet stone is? Result: GURGLEGURGLEGURGLE!!
Urist dug the wet stone.
The wet stone dripped.
The fortress became flooded.
And Urist drowned in it.

Quote
Facepalm2: Hmmm, I wonder what hot stone is? Result: IT BUUUUURNS!!
Urist dug the hot stone.
The hot stone gave way
Digging was a bad idea
Urist had a (really) bad day

Quote
Facepalm3: Ooooh, Adamantine. MINE IT RIGHT AWAY! Result: HELL
Urist dug the adamantine
It was hollow inside
Demons gushed forth
And flayed poor Urist's hide
Quote
Facepalm4: Giant attack? Just lock the doors. Result: He broke the door down...
Urist locked the door
To stay the Giant attack
But the Giant broke it down
Now poor Urist is flat
Quote
Facepalm5: Giant attack? Just send the millitia. Result: Who misplaced the armour?
Urist led the charge
of the militia to war
But they forgot their armour
Now poor Urist is no more

lol

Let me tell you a small tale, about a dwarf called Savesh. This tale takes place on 7th Obsidian. He had just recently been in a fight, and was resting in his bed, when all of a sudden, a half dead weresheep wandered into his room, and began crawling towards him. Then the other Savesh in the fortress ran in, and chopped the beast's head off. Then he heard a very distant cry of, ''ADAMANTINE, PRAISE THE MINERS AND DIG IT NOW!''. At that moment, he knew if they destroyed the adamantine, and thought about going to stop them. Then he just shrugged, he was missing a finger and he needed medical attenton first. Then he heard cries of ''DEEEEMOOOONS!'', and one again thought about going out to help in the war effort, but just stayed there. Then multiple demons ran into his room, and began to fight the other Sarvesh who had killed the werebeast. Fireballs, Iceballs, flying body parts, all of them somehow managed to miss him, even after 10 minutes(RT) of fighting. In the middle of it, a medic dwarf RAN PAST THE DEMONS, and healed Sarvesh's finger. He then got up, and proceeded to punch 3 of the severely wounded demons to death with his legendary wrestling skill, before becoming enraged, and throwing the medic dwarf into the other Sharvek. The medic dwarf proceeded to get stuck in the other Sharvek's lower body, but the other Sharvek kept fighting for 2 minutes before he finally died. Sharvek then picked up the other Sharvek's body, and BEAT A DEMON TO DEATH WITH IT.

Only in Dwarf Fortress.

Hi buddy, I don't mean to take the wind out of your sails, but the right forum for this thread is probably "DF General Discussion", as this forum is more for gameplay aspects of fort mode.
Maybe if you ask a moderator nicely, they'll move your thread for you.

Also, in your story, you started off saying "Savesh" (I'm pretty sure it's "Sarvesh" like you wrote in the middle...) and ended up saying "Sharvek" at the end...? How does one even do that by accident? Still, funny story though.
