So, can we blame Matthew on global warming?

someone named "Master Matthews" in another forum is taking credit for the hurricane

In other news, I got heavy showers and wind for a while but no damage and no flooded streets. People are gonna be disappointed when they don't see any damage anywhere but where they had to drill the shutters in.

Not sure if dying of old age is an honor or a shame for weaponmasters. On the one hand, it means they never got the opportunity to die in glorious battle. On the other hand, it means nothing could beat them in glorious battle.

RedKing, looks like NC is going to get hit a bit, or at least the southern 'corner' of the state.

Half of the tracks have it going out to sea and half of them have it looping back around south towards the Bahamas.

So, can we blame Matthew on global warming?

It's not that strong of a storm.

Better safe than sorry though, right?

Would be kinda awkward to do so given how long it's been since a major hurricane made landfall.

Speaking of which, is this accurate? Looks like it's doing the "not touching you" game?

Forgot I could check the current plots so yeah, it's been skimming the coast apparently?

The less it touches land, the longer it can go before 'friction'/loss of heat source degrades it.

If it keeps moving (because staying still also depletes it as it mixes the water beneath it) just at the edge of landfall, it can keep battering that coast with 'fresh' onshore high-force winds, and if it whips back round like one of those 'battling gyroscope' game things to have another go at its 'opponent' then it could be worse for those affected than just ploughing straight up onto the beach and the inland.

It's got crosswinds coming up to the north though, part of why models have it loop back, but it'll weaken a lot unless it meanders over and eats the eastern one via the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fujiwhara_effect to get a second... wind.

The first thing I notice is that there's another whirling storm not all that far behind it.

Checked NOAA and yeah, tropical storm Nicole. Though looks like that one is gonna swerve north.

Looks like it skimmed the coast and cooled off a bit before hitting SC/GA? That's good news.

surge is still the big danger, all that water has inertia and just because the wind speeds drop a bit doesn't mean the water is just going to stop in its tracks.

Yeah, even with it brushing instead of cutting the coast it pulled up a surge worth watching.

The eye might have turned away from NC, but we're sure as shit getting the rain. 300,000 without power in central NC so far, and water rescue teams have been busy. Eastern half of the state just got done being flooded a couple of weeks ago, so the water table just can't absorb any of this.

Our chunk of the Eno looks to be up about 10-11' above normal. Overtopped the banks and has climbed up about 40 feet into the backyard. Thankfully, it's about 170 ft to the riverbank from the house. Definitely keeping an eye on it though.

Made it out the other side here. Very minor damage, but mostly just a lot of downed brush debris here. Never lost power, but cable/internet went out probably around 5 am friday morning and just got it back about 15 minutes ago.

... yeah, outside flooding it looks like the US is getting off pretty lightly, but, well. Haiti is already recording around 840 dead, and the number is very, very likely to rise.
