The mystery has been solved! Oma is a mighty penguin vampiress! I figured that out by having her drink the blood of a goblin she'd given a sound beating to with her scourge.

I'm wondering if an adamantine whip would be better than an adamantine scourge, though, or a metal other than adamantine. My attacks are mostly doing bruising damage through armor that isn't particularly heavy. Got the job done against these goblins in the quest, but slowly!

Then again, it may be because I'm a penguin.

Nice! I think it's pretty interesting that your penguin woman is doing well, penguin people are some of the smaller animal men. Now the necromancer tower won't even be hostile to you, so you can grab some books and learn to reanimate the dead if you want. (if you picked up the reading skill)

As for your weapon being a bit bad, Adamantine is terrible for blunt weapons like whips and scourges because it's not a very dense material. Kind of counter intuitive but steel and silver are a lot better. (even copper is better than adamantine for blunt weapons) A platinum whip/scourge would probably be ridiculously powerful if you decided to cheat one in.

That goblin probably suffered a very slow and painful death.  :'(

Remember if you have any companions from now on, don't let them see you drinking blood. If you tell them to wait some distance away before you start biting people, that'll normally prevent them from seeing.

Oh yes, they died slow deaths. I couldn't really kill them until I severed arteries. They were delicious, though. :o

Oma went to take care of a bandit problem for her home village of humans (who are apparently some weird kind of tree hugger humans), and came upon a camp of goblins! The first battle was fought, and Oma was mightier than any humble penguin should be!

After the first death, the warlord of the camp came forth to do battle. I assume that killing him completes the quest? Anyway. He wasn't too encouraged by seeing me feeding on his predecessor.

And, with one lash to the head, the warlord was slowly but soundly scourged to death!

Interestingly, she is also good at biting despite having no skill in it. Penguin thing?

Anyway! I find it so hilarious that a vampire penguin is proving possibly successful, maybe I'll keep a story thread about her adventures across the world? :)

Well, after that longer-than-expected journey, my penguin woman vampiress successfully made it to the necromancer's tower. There, she claimed the slab and became a necromancer!

Along the way, she slightly massacred a dwarven drinking hall (needed the blood!), fought countless boogeymen, and a pack of wolves. She's up there in the legendary levels now as a fighter. Seems little penguins can be vicious killers after all! Beware! :o

okay funny thing about necrotowers the necromancers themselves are friendly the zombies aren't.
if you can kite and kill them away from their masters you can just yield and walk in and learn a thing or too, maybe pick up a necrobuddy. the necromancers only raise the dead on provoked attack so the dead stay dead this time.
also the nerfed zombies should be like fighting bandits.

They zombies (but not the boogeymen) actually totally ignored me. I was able to stroll through the tower and get the slab, no issues. Probably due to being a vampire. The boogeymen gave me lots of trouble along the way, but they also built up my skills very quickly. I was legendary or quite high in several skills thanks to them by the time I made it to the tower.

The only real problem for me at this point is getting blood. I stopped as of becoming a necromancer and haven't resumed yet, but I was thirsty for blood at that point and far from the nearest town. I've considered using one of the necromancers, but I'm not sure if that'll turn the zombies aggro. In any event, blood has been a challenge in general because I tend to kill things with my scourge before I knock them out. I've tried to knock them out with wrestling pinches, without much luck.

Immortality does have one drawback, I guess! If only I could use my necromancy to make myself into a lich or something. :D

you could just grab the book or slab from the tower then make a zombie free camp that holds the tower so the next adventurer can be vampire free.
the oppose life token on zombies is the major reason folks use vampirism to get in to towers. also depends on if you want to be friends with townsfolks or just go thirsty forever as a master of undead, you put folks in a headlock by the throat and choke them out, pinching does nothing or sever parts or damage the bodypart.

I actually did try that before the pinches, using my upper arm to grab their neck and just hitting period to pass time. They had a tough time breaking free, but eventually, the drunk dwarves I was using would charge and collide to escape before being knocked out.

May just be that tripled strength isn't much for a penguin person! :)

PS: My next step in my path to power - slaying and reanimating a dragon or three. Then, I go on the warpath! Mwaaahahaha.

throat is different from the neck. which unlocks a chokehold and in 3 ticks would cause the person to pass out.
the neck doesn't do this.

Waiting for Hurricane Matthew to hit me (pretty much dead on), prepped as much as I can, so settling in to distract my mind with my evil penguin queen-to-be.

Is there any point to taking all of the books in the tower, or is one enough to raise the reading skill? Is there even a point to raising reading once you can read the necromantic slab?

I appreciate the advice about wrestling the throat to disable them. Throat, neck, seems close! Heh. I'll try that out once I visit the dwarves.

Oh, and I've noticed you can claim sites. Is it possible for me to claim ownership of the tower?

uhh yes but lordship kinda iffy on royal abilities.
since it's kinda a thing no one I know has dive into. you could get your adventurer into a power in a dwarf fort but I haven't heard anyone stay a fortress guard to work themselves up the ladder to be general.

Just need the one w/secrets of life and death. Also if you have a need for think abstractly/self-examination/appreciate artwork all you need is one book to read.

Oh, I just want the necromancer's tower. :)

I kept a separate save and then tried declaring that I was claiming ownership of the site. Nothing happened, so I killed the necromancer overlord. This did nothing but tick off the other necromancers, and I decided that wasn't what I was aiming for after they were... Uh, newly walking dead.

Guess killing the overlord doesn't make me the overlord, even if I declare it so. :)

I've never tried on an undead tower, but it should work.  It's just not obvious.  If you chat with someone you will see the added menu option of "Ask them to be a hearthsperson" or something like that.

Getting my questions in before the hurricane hits, because Dwarf Fortress shall be my distraction during and after!

I'm aiming to face and gain control of either a demon lord or a dragon next, but I'm thinking dragon. Conquering a measly tower is hardly worthy, but a metropolis is better!

I wear a suit of adamantine armor, shields, and wield a platinum scourge. I suspect dragonfire will melt these things. I'm an armor user, so is there really anything to wear? (I know about the advice to switch to wooden shields, at least)

If your shield skill is decent then dragonfire won't be a problem. Your character should block it automatically, it won't melt your shield.  :)

Hope the hurricane passes by smoothly, wish you the best.
