Getting my questions in before the hurricane hits, because Dwarf Fortress shall be my distraction during and after!

I'm aiming to face and gain control of either a demon lord or a dragon next, but I'm thinking dragon. Conquering a measly tower is hardly worthy, but a metropolis is better!

I wear a suit of adamantine armor, shields, and wield a platinum scourge. I suspect dragonfire will melt these things. I'm an armor user, so is there really anything to wear? (I know about the advice to switch to wooden shields, at least)

You actually don't need armor. The dragon has all level 6 skills. You just need to have over level 6 in your shield and dodge. Preferably, say level 8. This should get you by safely. You should be able to auto-block/dodge everything, as you'll want to rely on auto-defense mainly.

Dragonfire will raise the temp in the area, so you won't want to have any metal on your character, or be standing on any metal like the coins and items that are lying around the lair. Most people will probably have the one metal weapon. This is a gamble and could get you killed.

The optimal amount of metal is zero.

Right now the torsion from damage is so overpowered, so long as you have the skills for it you can kill a dragon with your bare hands. Or you could train up miscellaneous object user and employ a sharp rock.

Still holding on to power, though the weather's getting rougher! Appreciate the thought. :)

Taking on a dragon unarmored and with my bare hands might not go well. My use of wrestling on the penguin woman extends about to strangling dwarves, and I don't think I've tried much of any direct punching. My lash has taken me far! May have to gamble it.

EDIT: Just checked. I'm not up on the rank numbers, but I'm Legendary with Shield Use and Fighter, High Master Lasher, Expert Dodger, Skilled Observer, Adept Armor User, Competent Wrestler, and other things not of much note. Only a dabbling Striker, so a fistfight with a dragon might go poorly.

Your stats are good to go.

When you enter any lair/camp/shrine it's useful to have ambusher/sneak on (I believe that's shift + s). With sneak on, every creature's vision field is displayed and you get an idea of their position and what direction they're facing. You'll notice the dragon like all burrow dwellers is most likely facing the wall, immersed in who knows what. As a result, you can just walk over to it, attack from behind and aim for its head. You'll need to go through the attack menus. If the headshot isn't a clean one (not shown as easy/easier), you can then opt to pass one tick, by pressing the comma key, and then go through the menus again to check to see if % of headshot has improved. You can repeat this process until you see a good shot. This is the way to kill it without fighting.

If you'd rather fight and literally play with fire, the optimal tactic is to fight from a chokepoint. If you're in a corridor with the dragon, after grounding it first (all big creatures need to have their leg/foot smashed, dropping them to remove their charge attack), you can eliminate the spread of dragonfire as it is aimed toward you, will be shield blocked and will have no adjacent tiles to spread to:

A good way to lead it to the chokepoint is use multi-attack (quick-attack + dodge away). The benefit is you will be able to both re-position and get that grounding leg/foot strike in to kill its charge. This does involve a manual dodge which will buff your dodge roll and nerf your auto-defense shield block, but your shield user skill is high enough to accommodate for the nerf.

do note since your sneaking you get a bonus to your attack plus since they don't notice you you can go for slower heavier hitting attacks and aim for hard to hit spots.
this works even if they notice you as you get a sneaking bonus for when their vision cone is away from you, going in from the back is favorable when with companions as you can Flank and get a clean sneaky hit.

I survived the hurricane, and by some miracle, didn't lose power despite it sounding like a dragon was roaring at the house all night.

Speaking of dragons! I was only able to get directions to one of them out of the dwarves, so I'm slowly making my way there. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

The big annoyance right now is the boogeymen. They can't touch me, but it takes me quite a few attacks to bring them down. I was hoping they'd ignore me somewhere between vampire and necromancy, but my character is evidently still prone to fear. :P

Good to hear you made it through. Hope the house hasn't sustained any damage. Fall isn't a great season for the East Coast at times.

Well, after I weathered the hurricane, I resumed Oma's quest to enslave a dragon! The only one she had a sure location on required her to cross continents, glaciers, and two oceans (thank goodness for penguin swimming speed). A long, long journey later, she was at the lair and facing the beast!

Though it breathed fire upon her, Oma effectively blocked it with her shields and did battle with the dragon. In the end, she was victorious, taking not a single scratch in the confrontation.

Oma then used her necromantic magic to reanimate and enslave the dragon. Her quest was successful, and she was now prepared to claim her throne!

Although the dragon's lair was in the middle of nowhere, there was an elven city nearby. It seemed a good way to test out the dragon's undead strength, and she needed blood, anyway. Along their journey, they were attacked by dingo men at night, but the dragon made short work of them!

During the assault on the elven home tree, Oma got her blood from the local tavern keeper. However, she lost sight of the dragon for a moment... and now he's gone. No idea of what happened to him, and he doesn't even show on the companions list. There was nothing present to kill him, so it's very odd.

Considering it took me two RL days to reach that lair, it's also very disappointing! Ah well. A semi-successful venture for Oma Nongospim Jeha Zostra the Penguin Woman Necromantic Vampire.

As much as I love the success of the penguin woman, can anyone point me to good instructions on how to create a new type of intelligent playable race? I think I'll be making dragon men, or maybe angel men. Heh!

I think lost undead can show up as *'s on the travel map.

don't know if it's been said already, but i find that becoming a werecritter after powerleveling a bit helps a LOT. the only thing you need to worry about then is your ability to flee. hence i tend to take strength, agility and willpower.

If you take damage just flee till fast travel, wait for full moon and yup. even better is to wait just before said moon before engaging hard critter.
