Why do my dwarves prefer to drink from the moat?
« on: June 08, 2008, 03:33:00 am »

There's plenty of alcohol, I have four stills going non-stop to produce fungus-based intoxicants. There's also a well in the walled-in courtyard, fed directly from the moat in an example of dwarven civil engineering.

So why the BLAZES do these fools prefer to leave the courtyard and walk AROUND IT to go and drink from the far side of the moat?

They probably started on a different z-level and were closer (x, y) to the moat than the well.

As to why they're drinking water instead of alcohol... I do not know. Usually only wounded and bedridden dwarves are subjected to water when alcohol is available.

Sounds like you've got a legendary liar spreading rumors about moatwater curing hangovers.

It may be that a whole bunch of dwarves are trying to get a drink at once.  Dwarves are extremely impatient, and if you don't have enough individual booze barrels for every dwarf who wants one to get one at the same time, they'll get desperate and head for water, at which point screwy pathfinding takes over.

If you do have more barrels than dwarves then I have no idea.

Sometimes there's no accounting for tastes. On one particular fort, I had myself a nice little well setup, but no less than five dwarves in succession wandered on past the lonely booze stockpile in favor of making a trek across literally half the map in order to access the river. The same river that I had built those channels and that well for the express purpose of having them avoid.
The named giant jaguar thought they were delicious.
Anyhoo, as far as I can tell, they just sometimes feel like drinking water, preferably directly from the river.

I would imagine setting a drinking zone would at least make such things less common. Maybe more than one well, closer to the dining room/bedrooms?

Haha, yeah, I did too. Stagnation is a right killer, innit?
Maybe that's it. Maybe the well didn't have enough circulation.
