In the fast travel mode, you're looking for either a static or moving asterisk.

One way to find critters like your sasquatch is to have tracking set to on. I believe that's the letter (K). Tracking should be on for both fast travel mode and slow travel mode, as you'll alternate been both while following tracks. In slow travel, the two types of tracks you're looking for are either the more common (") or the less common but more informative (!). You'll need to (l)look at each track to have an idea of where to go.
