May 1, 2001, a virus that had no visible symptoms had infected had of the population, causing people grow a tiny person inside of them. When the mini-person was finished, they shed their outer skin and the mini person was given their consciousness. In a flash of photons, their mass, outside of the mini person disintegrate ((Don’t ASK me how it works, it just does.)), making them 1 cm tall. They also retained their trademark fragility. The virus also affected insects in making their exoskeletons softer and their bodies weaker. Regular animals were not affected by the virus.
A minute after the shrinkage, ninety percent of people driving cars hit objects on the sides of the street, other cars that are driving, or even off of bridges. Everyone in those cars died, nearly immediately. Everyone in a parked car that wasn’t struck, died from starvation, dehydration, heatstroke ((if stuck in the sun)), or other various problems due to temporary blindness.
Anarchy ensues. It reigns for about eight weeks. Around this time, a monarchy rises, and organizes people to make a common shelter. They settle in the nearby grocery store. They have lots of nonperishable foods and the means to start industry. And for over 100 years, everything was more or less stable. Industry was budding, approaching 1920’s level industrialization, a good method of farming has arisen from aphids, or ‘Ant Cows’, but, the economy was starting to fall. After a quick skirmish with the fascist party, the economy stalled completely, allowing for a well funded and well organized fascist coup.
The coup took place in year 137. The dictator, Torstyn von Honig, asserted himself as the Führer of the city. Within years he had dissolved the economy, so the citizens had no power, he’d made the military the best armed force in the known world, and he’d implemented a no questions allowed policy. Any ‘dissenters’ were publicly executed. He’d made himself the supreme ruler. In his death, in year 184, he appointed the next best nationalist as the next Führer.
Führer Omanji Jakran was put into office in year 185. He is still the ruler of the society today. His regime has continued the oppression of the previous ruler, but, he’s started to discriminate against religious leaders, followers, and speakers. They’ve been arrested, executed, exiled, or forced to preach against their beliefs to satiate the Führer’s anger. It has raised tensions between the different factions of the city. On the one hand there’s the democratic nation, funded by drugs and not above selling to whoever has the money. Then there’s the Communist party, they deal in slaves, ‘nuff said.

Today is the fiftieth birthday of the current Führer. He’s holding a parade in his own honor. If you don't go, you don't get to live in the city. Simple as that.
