It's like DF40d, all over again!
« on: September 20, 2016, 02:14:24 pm »

After a long absence, I just started a new game usign the latest version.

Flatish Forest/scrub biome, wilderness, with a stream running through.

Started digging down, but hit an aqueduct.  Decided to wall in an above-ground area with logs, before attempting to breach the aquaduct.  Built the wall up to the stream, and then assigned a bridge across it.  Mechanic/architect picked up a log, trotted up to the bridge...

And suddenly, there was blood and teeth everywhere, all over the grass and spreading through the water.  And no sign of my architect. Looked down a level, and there he was, injured and drowning.  Checked the combat logs:

the Mechanic Deler Arustducim is fighting!
the Sea Lamprey is fighting!

The mechanic attacks the sea lamprey but He jumps away!
The sea lamprey slaps the mechanic in the head with his tail, but the attack is deflected by the mechanic's (pig tail hood)!
The force pulls the neck, tearing apart the skin!
The sea lamprey slaps the mechanic in the left upper arm with his tail, bruising the muscle through the (giant kakapo leather cloak)!
The force pulls the left shoulder!
Deler Arustducim, Mechain: Those injuries... Begone fear!
The sea lamprey slaps the mechanic in the right upper leg with his tail, but the attack is deflected by the mechanic's (giant kakapo leather cloak)!
The force bends the right hip!
The sea lamprey slaps the mechanic in the left lower arm with his tail, bruising the muscle through the (giant kakapo leather cloak)!
The force twists the left elbow!
The sea lamprey slaps the mechanic in the upper left back teeth with his tail, and the severed part flies off in an arc!

...etc, until my poor mechanic/architect was dead from either drowning or being beaten to death by a lamprey.

I think fish are hardcore again.

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.

You think that's bad? A mountain gnome guzzled down all my booze five minutes in. A year supply for seven dwarves. Only one gnome. And here I thought making a new mountainhome on a joyous mountain was going to be fun.

I managed to make some wine before anyone could gobble down the plump helmets, but still.

Would it be too cruel to keep the gnomes in cages, a square away from the alcohol stockpiles? Or should I just drop them in the volcano?

So uh, yeah you just murdered a until proven otherwise pretty neutral innocent being for no reason.

Are Gnomes affected by alcohol poisoning now? Are they drinking themselves to death? The only noble way to die.

Gnomeblight is an extract. Been in the game since 40d. It kills gnomes the way melting FB extracts kill dwarves.  Harmless to everything else.  It is extracted from kobold bulbs.

If not drinkable the normal way, put it in a dwarven bathtub, as the only way in or out of the booze stockpile.

Hilarity will ensue.

Sadly, gnomes are not edible....

Hm, though maybe if they die on reanimating region you could use their bones after re-killing.

Do gnomes even exist in vanilla DF? I haven't see any yet.

They are rare, but when you have them you have them. One fortress of mine had about thirty captured gnomes, who I pitted against ferocious giant animals in an arena built into the mountainside. IIRC they usually died in one or two hits.

@Nagidal: how often do you embark on good or evil mountain? That's the only place.

Gnomes are pests. They can instant-guzzle liquors, but other than that, they can do nothing. Any sort of hostile response and they flee for their lives. They're made of paper and they're as strong as it is, too ...
