Actually, I haven't had a single run in with any sort of fauna yet. I'm in autumn of the first year.
This game however is pissing me off. I'm not quite sure why, but it's moving INCREDIBLY slowly. Not lagwise, I've never had a game run this fast, but progress-wise.
I think my new approach of giving only Novice skills instead of Proficient has backfired.

My food and drink are also really low which is kind of scaring me.

EDIT: I've given up. I'm restarting later with skilled dwarves and, hopefully, less inexplicable deaths.
A fox just violently died. He was on a plateau that only led to my camp and nothing went through my camp to kill him. He just died of old age by ripping himself to shreds.
God damn it.

At the first bit:
This game does run fairly smoothly, but even the best gaming computer will lag if there's too many creatures.
At the low food:
Actually it's pretty easy to make food. Did you bring seeds (A variety is best, but the Plump Helmet is king of plants)? If not, you doomed yourself.
At reclaiming:
Hope MORE Spiders don't spawn.

...Did...

Did you remember to seal up the cave?

No, it wasn't lag. The game was running great. Just, everyone was taking fucking FOREVER to get anything done.
Come summer I hadn't even finished mining out the first bedrooms and workshops, hadn't started the farms or the storage and most of my shit was across the mountain. My Farmer didn't feel like farming, no one felt like hauling the food and drink and, since I started almost everyone in Novice at best, I was moving incredibly slow on everything.

I won't be reclaiming, I'll be re-genning.

Oddly enough, many of the spiders weren't in the cave at the start. A good number of them were hanging outside, especially around the volcano. Then they just kind of wandered off...
Yet, despite no giant cave spiders being there anymore, imps still managed to suddenly and violently drop dead. Sigh.

I saw lots of tetrahedrite in the caves, so yes.

I think he asked whether there was iron, not copper.

underground river= infinite amount of water
cave= closed space
infinite amount of water+closed space= massacre (for your cpu at least ^^)

Was flux obvious? Because I embarked here and all I see is igneous rocks. And that's all I saw from the site selection screen in rock layers tab.

Is this the correct location? It seems to match your description, except that it only has 4 biomes.

If it is, I hope this image helps others.

That's what I decided was the location, too.

Its hard to tell if its right, he may have used one that is actually 8 wide to get an additional biome. Its important because the size seems to affect how the site is generated, so the local site will look different (but have the same general features)

Mine has 2 pages of swallowmen, 1 page of giant swallows (my personal nemesis) and 1 page of Giant spiders!
There is a complex cave or tunnel system, inhabited by a peaceful commune of troglodytes, giant cave swallows, cave swallowmen, moledogs and giant cave spiders. They are packed in there like sardines.
The caves are run through by swaths of iron and gems.

I have not found any flux yet, nor the chasm, which I think is buried.

I actually created this world as well and went ahead and made one in the same spot..except mine was 7 wide, two to the right, and oneup.  None the less I've found the Chasm in my setup.  Big huge hole with a whole buncha nothing then squares at the bottom that say the word 'Chasm' as their desc right?  (I've only made 3 fortresses..the first one on a diff computer that took me over a year to figure out how to properly mine underground <.<...then my 'main' one which is a mess of arcitecture..and now this one).

Anyway.  The chasm is towards the bottom and slight left of center on my map.  I imagine on the one pictured...its going to be closer to the middle vertically and slightly right of the middle horizontally.....need to look at the wiki and see what the use of a chasm is now...

I generated as per Stafir Ortnev's directions and the unit list matches that of the OP.

One use of the chasm is to trap purring maggots so that you can milk them and make dwarven cheese. Yes, you can actually put milkers and cheese makers to use!
