Would you want your SO to Fight for your honor?
« on: September 18, 2016, 06:19:32 pm »

This is such a large trope in fiction and let me get this straight.

I don't necessarily mean to the death. I mean someone just calls you a mean name and your SO just clobbers them!

This is typically shown as desirable... In fact even if the character is a pacifist this is seen as desirable.

In fact I've seen the whole "I refuse to fight" as being a terrible thing FAR more then I've seen it being depicted as the mature method of solving a fight.

which is odd because one of the very first things I was told by my mother is not to fight because someone insults her. :P

I said no. People are fickle beasts, and behaving that impulsively shows a capacity for abuse that I find unattractive. There are times when violence isn't unethical, but those rare times don't fit with the trope and have nothing to do with romantic relationships.

The only time I'd want an SO indulging in violence is if there is legitimate potential of harm to life and limb of me or them. Otherwise it is a poor idea to encourage abusive behavior regardless of the target.

What does a Senior Officer have to do with relationships?

Significant Other

Basically a catch all for: Girlfriend, Boyfriend, Wife, Husband, Fiancee, and such.

Well you have to be married to your Spouse.

Significant Other can just be someone your dating.

I would rather have a SO who would be my Natasha with a lullaby to calm me down.

No, but I'd be okay with them fighting for my honour.

Generally no, to the question. They're going to need a better reason than that if they want any help getting out of jail or dealing with the legal fees. I guess if they're okay with that and sufficiently wealthy to tank the costs I couldn't really stop 'em but collecting assault charges is definitely not something I look for in a partner's behavior.

... though now I'm kinda' curious how often shows actually show that aspect of things. I know I've seen it, like. Once. But generally the MC or whatever cheerfully decks some person in broad daylight in front of witnesses and you never get to hear about the pressed charges or the jail time or the bail and all that.

Romance in stories very often resembles anti-social behavior if attempted in real life.

Someone calling me a mean name doesn't really count as anything as far as honor goes for me. That's just them calling me a mean name for whatever reason.

If my SO were to physically attack them, we'd need to have a talk.

Now, as for insulting them right back...

It depends on how seriously honor has been impugned. There's certainly insults that demand a response.
