Ghost Town - Bring out your dead!

You awake from a cold dark place into a land where the overhead sky is made of scorching flames. You find yourself completely and utterly naked and find to your surprise that you have been reduced to a skeleton. You look around you: you're not alone. A conspicuously well-dressed skeleton armed with four revolvers and an evil look in his eye sockets approaches out of a red mist.

He introduces himself as Ephraim Walsh, Mine Manager of Shining Bluff and informs you that you are in-fact quasi-dead. He explains: using evil magic, his employers have prevented your souls from entering the afterlife. From the unnatural shadows emerges three large brutish creatures that look nearly like the bastard combination of a gorilla and a lizard. They each are carrying crates. Inside the first are frayed and stained rag ponchos covered in soot. Ephraim explains that these are your clothes while you work in the mines and that if you do well you may earn new clothes. In the second are leather backpacks. In the third are five-shot revolvers in a holster with an adjustable leather belt.

So equipped, he leads you into the mines and points out the pickaxes and mining helmets among piles of now inanimate bone. He tells you that these are the miners who have failed their job and warns you of a chilling fact: "Their souls are still bound to their bones. There is no escape. While you are whole, you can move and speak and think as you could while you were alive. Should you find yourself so dismembered, you'll find the thinking to be all you can do. Do not disappoint and I'd advise you not waste any bullets!"

At last he shows you what you'll be mining for: An obsidian crystal with a violet inner glow. He says that each of you will have your own minecart and that the more you extract, the better you'll be rewarded, and that underperforming will not be tolerated. He says that should you do particularly well, you'll be allowed to settle in Shining Bluff and "live" out quite comfortable lives.

So now here you are in the dark of the mines. Who are you, how did you die, and what will you do?

Most of them seem pretty out of it right now. One guy is testing his movement ability.

Status: Unharmed. Armed with a holstered six-shot revolver, fully loaded with seemingly normal bullets. Wearing a soot-covered poncho and a backpack.

Start testing the structural integrity of my new form, GENTLY.  See how the hell I'm staying together without any ligaments.
Magic! It's true, you can see the violet threads of it between your bones where the light from the crystals shines on you, like strings on a marionette, leading upwards through your body to your skull. It seems to have a pretty solid structural integrity. Tugging at the threads yields nothing, but you feel a tug of resistance when you try to move your bones farther than the joints would have allowed when you were alive. You're a bit surprised at how much you can feel via these threads, even while you have no sensation from the bones themselves.

Status: Unharmed. Armed with a holstered six-shot revolver, fully loaded with seemingly normal bullets. Wearing a soot-covered poncho and a backpack.

On the ground are the bones of the fallen, on the walls are veins of glowing black crystals, on the ground are helmets with lamps powered by will-o-the-wisps and there are dozens of pickaxes made from a bluish steel. There is a passage way deeper into the mine that's bathed in a dull violet glow. In the distance the violet glow seems brighter. The glow here is not very strong and it's quite dark.

You grab a pickaxe from the floor. You head deeper into the mine. You note that all the crystals seem to be fairly similar so far, except that some are brighter than others. From what little you can see, it looks as though the brighter the crystal the thicker the vein.

Status: Unharmed. Armed with a holstered six-shot revolver, fully loaded with seemingly normal bullets. Wearing a soot-covered poncho, and a backpack. Wielding a pickaxe.

Better get outa here before I attract unwanted attention.

Grab a helmet and pick axe and head deeper into the mine.
With a clattering of bone you grab and equip a pickaxe and helmet. The wisp shrieks and burns brighter, illuminating your path. You head deeper in.

Status: Unharmed. Armed with a holstered six-shot revolver, fully loaded with seemingly normal bullets. Wearing a soot-covered poncho, a helmet illuminating your way and a backpack. Wielding a pickaxe.

The passage goes straight and has evidence of being fairly extensively mined. While there is still a wealth of crystal, there's also large divots in the wall where previous miners have extracted it. You could mine here or continue deeper in towards brighter crystals. There is also a reddish light intercutting the violet light deeper in and there's a fine mist on the ground in this part of the cavern.

They said that we would be punished if we underperformed. Better get to work. 

Go deeper and mine the brightest crystals I can find
