Tatooine is a binary star system, O foolish one. Besides advanced knowledge of geology, biology, chemistry and fluid physics, a certain knowledge of astronomy and human stories is also indispensable to the erudite Dwarf Fortess player.

What is the most reliable way of finding out your fortress symbol? Coin minting perhaps? My first one, Tourtin, had a palatial dining room full of engravings but no single pattern was repeated too often. This next one has not yet gotten to the point of engraving anything, we're happy to live, as of now.

Since my Engraver makes almost nothing but images of waves, renditions of images of waves that contain higher-quality images of waves than he's ever made, and depictions of trading, I'm going to go mint some coins.

Maybe if I'm lucky the coins will have renditions of images of waves.

The only really reliable way of finding out your fortress symbol is to wait until you've got loads of engraving and then check to see which two keep getting repeated (same name and description).

Then, backup your save, abandon, explore in adventure mode and find out which is the civ symbol and which is the fortress symbol. Then you can re-load the save.

(You don't have to go through the whole save-explore thing, but if you don't then there is no way of distinguishing between fortress symbol and civ symbol).

Last fort that I checked my fortress symbol was a Ballista arrow-head. The civ symbol was two Towercaps.

Civ symbol: 2 Squares.
Fort symbol: Skull.

The latter is named "The frilly mountainous glaze of waves"

Fort: Circles.

But I forgot that a really cool Fort-group name popped out of the engine which I kept. The Whirling Fire-Sword.
