Something tells me that we are not pulling a 'War of the Worlds' no matter how frilly the dresses that we put on our cattle may be. But we could probably pull it off with a revision, I mean, the technical aspects of combining the relevant elements are not particularly complex...

1941 tech is no match for aliens. Period. This is why we need to go ambitious and make the most of Forenia's ability to be 20 years ahead of the world as soon as possible.

Also, I believe the other option for the missiles is being entirely dumb, as we have no targeting ability at all.

The Problem:
Lack of Ability To Combat Aliens

Reasons:
Lack of Air Superiority
Inability To Properly Deploy Troops
Tech Disadvantages

Solutions:
SAM Batteries: Quantity is the only Quality we have. Therefore, even if our rockets are not signficantly faster, if we send enough of them from enough angles, we'll hit eventually.
Mobile Deployment Bases: We have trains. We have mobile airfields to deploy from. What we lack is a craft to transport our troops from the airfields to the landing sites. Presuming the Helicopters are cheap enough, we can use fleets of them to deploy our troops and gear for them in the field anywhere we need them as long as our railways can get close enough. We'll probably need to revise the rail bound airfields to be more effective for their cost, or even specialize them for Helicopters.
Reverse Engineer The Hell Out Of Em: The moment we make anything resembling a reasonable gain in their tech that we can actually make use of, we need to jump down its throat and pull out all the organs we can manage. Until then, it's a waiting game while we try to get the systems we need in place to take full advantage of what we will eventually have.

Okay what about the paper tiger defense system.

We make thousands of super cheap replicas of our other planes, totally stripped down but look identical, not even weapons or whatever.  Then we fly these in formation with a few real ones inside, they can't shoot down all of them!

Edit: it could just be a revision of a current airplane!

Do we want to shoot them down, or to fight them on the ground?

Fighting them on the ground for now is safer, will always be cheaper, and will get more out of it.

Then we need a lot of fast, firepower. Maybe we could deploy motorcycle squadrons? With and in-built RPG?

Well, we dont need them built in. Just hand each motorcycle team a RPG and a case of rounds and they can go do it. Our RPGs weigh a fair deal less than a recoilless rifle afterall.

Indeed it is. However, its still something we dont need to do. Plus, the motorcycles have pintle mounts on the sidecarts.

Well, frankly, I think what we need is some better way to coordinate our ground troops and radar to fight the menace. That, and give every civilian basic training and a gun so they can delay while the troops arrive.

We do have radio though. Maybe what we need isn't a new technology per say, but better organization. Soemthing like the Dowding system.

Currently our radios are just small enough to shove on a motorcycle. Getting some form that can be used in the field would help a hell of alot.
