I remember my American History + Philosophy teacher in high school telling us that we'd be the last year he'd ever teach who remembered 9/11. He said it's been interesting watching as generations grew older, seeing how the older students were far more focused on security than the younger ones. The shadow that it seemed to leave on a generation... Obviously, the impact was greater where I lived and was raised than for many of you, given that my high school is quite close to ground zero. My father worked in the towers. It's quite odd, living in manhattan on that very day but not being old enough to have fully grasped it. It's an odd juxtaposition vs most adults, who were alive to remember it, but much farther away and really only indirectly impacted; meanwhile I was right in the thick of it, but so much passed me by... I should go see the memorial one of these days. I've been avoiding it for the same reason everyone else I've spoken to has: the tourists. But maybe I owe it to myself to see it in person.

I was hoping to not see this topic. I've been having nightmares recently (I used to never have nightmares ever, but they started after my eventful Grand Jury service), and they've gotten worse as the anniversary has approached. I've been trying to keep my mind off of it. Maybe I should get off the internet. Or actually, study and work.

I'm not you, but...If I was you, I'd go to the memorial.  It sounds like you need the catharsis...

I do remember the weird division I felt with it happening right at that age milestone, though I don't think I ended up buying any booze until some time after, having become bored of it as a teenager.

Actually, I kind of assumed everyone felt that 9/11/2001 sort of replaced 1/1/2001 as the big division point between "then" and "now", but never actually thought to express that idea, is that weird?

Wow... I just realized i was playing in the backyard with a friend from middle school when his mom came out and told us what had happened.  We went inside and watched the news coverage with his parents... all three of the people I heard about the attacks with have passed now for various reasons... well shit.

Considering the latter caused a cognitive shift in everyone's perspective that was hammered in by all the other stuff that has happened relatively soon after, it kinda makes sense.

...and I was just thinking this morning 'Hey, I haven't heard anything about the twin towers! Maybe people are getting past it!'

Where you live?  Maybe.  Where I live?  They have not.

Probably not today, though, if he wants to avoid tourists.  If any time would be bad for tourists, I would think it would be a multiple of five anniversary landing on a weekend.

Soldier Who Said He’d Fight War So ‘Son Wouldn’t Have To’ Feels Like An Asshole Right Now

(Unrelated to context of thread: what stupid coding is behind that site? It artificially pages sideways, so that scroll-up manouver brings 'next page' in from the right, but equivalent downward-drag gives menu bar pop-down, screwing up tje intuitive time-honoured web-browsing experience for no noticable advantage...  Furrfu...)

At the time of the original 11th September, I remember feeling (and stating) that I wanted to get to see how the world would turn out, but being apprehensive about living through the process of the world changing.

I had no inkling we'd get to where we are now, and at this point there are more "I need to see how this turns out, but just wake me up when it has" situations. Things were simpler in the '90s. And even the '80s. I never really got to enjoy the full advantages of the '70s, though (nor the pitfalls) and my age disqualifies me from seriously discussing the joys of the '60s., or otherwise. But I do sometimes wonder if a handful of extra years in hand might have been nice. (Not too keen to have grown up the same handful of years later, though.)

I'm part of one of those people who were alive at the time of the attacks, but we're two young to remember it. It's a strange feeling, seeing all the emotion that comes out every year and still feeling this sort of disconnect.

The supernow, if you will, and I actually meant 1/1/2000, but like I said, my mind bumped over the past/future marker from Y2K to 9/11.

iirc I was three years old on 9/11. I remember my mom telling me about it, but I don't think I saw videos or images of it for a while after that.

I didn't even know what a meme was, but I knew that it would be the source of many.

Also jesus fuck, that one with the Obi-Wan quote from A New Hope implying that it was a false-flag.

I had just graduated from high school, (took the GED that summer) my cousin came in and turned on our TV saying, "You have to see this."

As I watched the towers go down I decided that GWB was going to do something extremely stupid, like start a war.  So I resolved to join the Army so that if a draft came up I would actually be where I wanted to be in a ground conflict, instead of being thrown wherever the DoD decided they needed warm bodies.

That cost me some severe damage to my knees, hips, and spine, any hope of attending college, and almost every employment opportunity for the past fifteen years.

I was in second grade, I remember criticizing Cartoon Network for being the only tv station not covering it. At first I was happy to have cartoons but then I just watched CNN all day, even after my parents stopped.

I was in third grade and had zero shits to give, since I didn't even know the World Trade Center was even a thing before it got explodified. To me the whole thing may as well have happened on a different planet.
Still doesn't affect me much, other then being able to make REALLY EDGY Klondike Bar jokes.

Mom spent that whole year obsessing over it though, which is kinda weird since I don't think SHE really knew anything about the WTC before then either.
