I've come up with my only version of elves for the game design document I'm working on, but I don't care to give away too many details.  Basically, instead of pale, blond people, they have variety in skin tone like humans, but it leans towards darker skin due to their sunny environment.  There's more to it than that, but that bit is the part that is less tailored to my game's setting.

And this is how tinned food was invented.
Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

I've started to picture everything in DF in the same way Fault draws it.

Same here. Every time I imagine DF, no one has pupils or irises.

that hurts, mittens.  :'(

Oh, and there was a big discussion on raptors on FUTURE OF THE FORTRESS, so I decided to draw a beak dog:

I may have to change the design a bit, 'cause in the prefstrings it says they have hunched backs.
oh, and beaks.

Hmm something wrong with the mouth.

When you do the re-design for the backs, make the mouth make more biomechanical sense, more :V shaped than a :U or when it closes it will look a bit like :d

I had always imagined them as really small Knarloc (of 40k design)

Not exactly but similar.

It really should have a beak though.

A beak isn't neccessarily a bird-style beak, IIRC a number of amphibians and reptiles have 'beaks' which are basically just hardened lips with somewhat of an edge (i'm not sure of the details as to how or why it's hardened).

So what that Knarloc has for a mouth would actually qualify as a beak, probably.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Drew this like a month ago, but never got around to colouring it or fixing the legs (they're just crappy placeholders). But since it's not likely I'll finish it in the near future, and everyone is talking about elves now, I may as well post it.

I'm working on scanning another load of drawings and doodles onto my PC. I draw laboriously and very sporadically, and a lot of the stuff I've posted is actually years old.
Also, I'm completely awed by some of the drawings in here, my negative doodles are not worthy.

Has it recently been on fire? That is the good and proper state for elfs.

It's a sinister aura. He burns with the flame of wickedness!

Elves should totally be babysnatchers. That would even be somewhat mythologically accurate.

I sort of like the idea of elves as sentient plants.  Maybe their skin is green due to photosynthesis occurring in it, which would free them from the need to eat plants or animals and allow them to live in perfect harmony with nature.  Or maybe not.  But I agree that they need something to make them more alien, so that they're not just perfect, immortal humans with pointed ears (i.e. Tolkien... although Tolkien never specified that their ears were pointy).

Thanks, Fault! Yeah, I've been hiding. Haven't produce anything dwarf-related lately.

Balathustrius: So, if elves are evil, green things that live in dark forests and worship strange, alien nature gods, what does that leave for the goblins? :P

I think immortality, once the implications of being able to spend six thousand years becoming really good at your chosen profession are properly implemented, will be enough to set them apart from the humans. Along with whatever cultural things end up making the most sense. It's not like every race HAS to be new and innovative, as long as there's adventuring to do in the world. You could do a deep and rich fantasy world with just humans if you wanted to.
