It needs some fire and smoke spewing out of it. Looks more like a borehole or something to me.

I have to disagree. This pit just look like there is blinding light in the bottom, which looks fine to me.
Yet, I would love to some HFS-metal nearby. I don't really know why, but I always thought said HFS-metal had a particular glow under the glowing pit light. Although I wouldn't be able to describe it.
Maybe glowing brightly while darkening the air around would look interesting.

That would actually be pretty cool; threads of glowing (blueish?) metal spread through out the cavern, but making not adding to the lighting of the scene.

I used to picture adamantine as a redish orange, before I actually saw it in-game.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

The little violet veins in the background rock wall are supposed to be adamantium.  But I think you guys are right; they're too subtle.

Fire and smoke would be a little overpowering to the scene, I think.  The impression I always have when I think of the glowing pits is of an eerie, glowing hole into the depths, but quiet, coiled... waiting.

If you make them a sort of gleaming glittery blue that should contrast nicely with the reds and browns.

I usually picture Adamantine as a platinum color, or maybe iridescent.

Anyway, my 2 cents- increase the glow, maybe add some adamantine. Bonus points if you can make an animated glow from within, that would really cement the effect that it's no natural light.

I love the glowing pit - the way the Adamantine is set in the wall makes it look like it really is radiating out from the pit...

I'm talking about the bronze colossus. It's supposed to be made entirely of bronze.
But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

Traditionally Mithril\Adamantium are 'silvery', usually considered very shiny white metals (not unlike Titanium.)

In worlds that have both Mithril and Adamantium though, then Mithril usually gets the shimmering white metal color and Adamantium gets something more exotic; a sort of bright teal like in DF seems to be common, other common colors i've seen are a deep purple-black or red-black and occasionally a silver-orange.

Yeah, I think the idea is that they're blue but would look violet in that reddish light.

It looks pretty cool in any case.  I like the engravings off to the side.

I spent 5 minutes on this because I only cared about the joke.
No artistic value.
