Exactly - Toady One doesn't have female dwarves with beards, and that's not how he sees them. He did, however, add in the line so that people that want female dwarves with beards can have them without too many problems. I'm sure I saw a post on it somewhere as well.

You remember incorrectly. The new raws bring this up specifically:

Now we'll declare the specific castes.

   [CASTE:FEMALE]
      The gender tag lets it know how breeding works.
      [FEMALE]
      [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE]
      To add beards, put square brackets around the following:
      BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:FACIAL_HAIR_TISSUE_LAYERS
   [CASTE:MALE]
      [MALE]
      [BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:FACIAL_HAIR_TISSUE_LAYERS]

So THAT'S how they fish! I always wondered how they did it without poles, I suppose massive traces of food would be found in the beards after the dwarves ate, that would be some good bait.

So if female dwarfs don't have beards, doesn't that mean that only make dwarfs can fish?  Seems to be an inconsistency in the raws.
