Bit of testing, kind of a mess.

Really waiting for those new underground features.

How much of this is free-hand? It looks like a lot of photoshop filters/effects or something similar were applied... You can ignore my question, I am just curious, the style is very interesting and I want to know how do you do it. The picture looks awesome and the atmosphere of the place is just great. <3 the lighting.

Thanks guys for the nice comments.   :)

Umiman, no, but I wish I did, heh.

I hate posting here without a picture to show.  So, speaking of warhammer:

Did this as a joke; his face is a photo; some wrestler or something.  This has nothing to do with DF, so I'll spoiler it.  Hope no one minds.

Well it's a bit hard to answer how much is "free-hand". I Did most of that with a few layers and fancy brushes in black and white, then made color magically appear with a gradient map. Theeeeen lots of different kinds of adjustementing and fixing with brush modes (mainly color dodge) and layers. It's pretty quick once you get a hang of it.

Made me think of how absurd such a building would be in real life. Sure, it looks awesome, but enclosed buildings over a gigantic lake of lava? In a cavern? The air in there is probably not much cooler than the lava.

And this is also the kind of image I get in my head when I plan a fortress.

Could have problems with traders and liaisons, though.

A liaison has left displeased.

A cave swallowman, lost long underground, raises its dark weary eyes to that which shines through the small opening overhead.

The sky.

Possibility 1: It is a cavern that has just been flooded, and the air needs time to heat before it cooks the occupants.

Possibility 2: Who says that's a dwarf standing by the magma? It could be a magma man or some other beasty.

Possibility 3: User has temperatures turned off. The dwarf is considering going for a swim, safe in knowing lava does not support carp or sea lampreys.

Possibility 4: Dwarves are immune to convection from magma.

After all; they are mythological creatures.
