Bernhard Hennen a fantasy writter from Germany does a good take on it. Everything anthropomorphic below 1.50 that isnt a dwarf is in the family of "Kobolds".

Considering that the French animalman like Lutin (mostly Fox - Lutin is the French word for Kobold), the irish Leprechaun and some other are all considered as Kobolds i would say that classification is one of the best.

Yeah, I always counted them as sort of dog-raccoon-rat humanoids.  A scaly Kobold is a Goblin with bad skin.

Besides, look at the behavior - rummaging through your stuff, stealing shiny trinkets... totally raccoon.

I kill Goblins, but I try and trap Kobolds for the zoo.
