Cutebolds are bolds of a specific anatomy, with the big black eyes and squarish snouts, often as broad in the front as the back, and floppy ears like a puppy dog. Whether they have fur or not is generally not considered a part of the style, because artistically, it's not depicted.

"Cutebold" does also imply a certain behavior set, but of course that's of little relevance here.

My Kobolds only have fur as an adaptation, but are still internally reptilian. They have large pointy ears and are murderous and plotting (although somewhat clumsy in execution).

I have some (very) old dpaints I did a while back here:

I should probably do some updated dwarf related paintings ...

reptiles are earless, tough. even primitive mammals that lay eggs like echidnas and platipuses are earless

Its a morphological similarity from adapting to a similar life-style/environment to rodents.

(Maybe the insides of the ears are scaled and reflect heat onto whatever that is called in snakes that senses heat, like heat radar. Or something.)

(Actually reptiles DO have ears. Just small crappy ones.)

also, mammals are heterodonts, meaning their teeth are different from each other, while in most reptiles all the teeth have the same basic shape even if some are bigger then others... studying the incisives of the depicted specimen, i'd say it's an heterodont...

as a side note, i love the drawings, and they look exactly like i imagine df's kobbolds

EDIT: oh! and they're cuter than cutebolds

Good question, I think my variation is still cold blooded. They probably bask near sources of heat, perhaps in nooks and crannies around forges and other heat producing things of civilization. They build insulated nests with whatever they can steal, and huddle in groups to retain heat. The fur is an adaptation to help them retain what heat they can produce or 'absorb.'

My kobolds are smart enough to steal fire, although they lack the patience to start it on their own, and are rather poor at learning or teaching methods to others. In this way they are dependent on fire producing species, especially in cold climates. I imagine they dislike being near fire because it is too bright and often burns their flammable nests to ashes, but they might heat rocks and cycle them into their nests.

A little confused, a reptile's teeth are all the same?

(BTW I chose those teeth because they looked sharp a scary :) I do remember specifically NOT giving them the large rat teeth though)

Spoiler:  elven adventurer (click to show/hide)

coloured in with watercolour paint.

at this point it's too late to fix the leg in traditional media, but I'd be able to fix it if I ever decide to colour this digitally.

Just give him a rock or something to stand on.

Hmmm. Steps would work well, too.
