Tournament of cataclysm

1. If no one has posted in 7 3 days...
You may declare yourself the cataclysm lord
2. Give a 24-hour warning...
Choose a trait, like combat, or intelligence, or acid resistant that will be favored to survive the coming cataclysm...
3. After 24 hours describe the cataclysm and what survives in a new thread.
Transfer over this OPs rules.

((Fine by me, we're finally at the aerobic eukaryote level (my basic goal, as they're sufficiently familiar to most players) so another cataclysm isn't really necessary so soon.))

Eh let's set it at 3 to keep the pressure. If really not a single person can post for 3 whole entire days, that's pretty damn slow for a game like this.

Horrified by Alnis' actions, Gondella desperatly tried to find at least one surviving species in the wilting cold and burning ice. Digging with her bare branches, the spotted a tiny fleck of dark green, and marvelled: a photosynthesising colony of individual cells, organized into a single organism - an algae!
Even more wondrous was a being she could not positively identify neither as descending from critter crawlers or the Icirnit, but mixed characteristics from both... How could this be?
The nurturing godess held both to her septae and wept in joy, and in her warmth the two radically different species merged, each in turn feeding and protecting the other.

Thus the first lichen came to be, and Gondella prophesied that this little symbiont would become a hardscrabbling pathfinder to future life.

Gondella (nurturing)

-Created lichens

The Overly-Theatrical Goddess awakes from a long nap on the outermost ring of Caseus, only to notice her masterpiece has been undone. Looking into the icy layer of the planet, she sees a great underground - or is it underice? - cavity: it turns out to be a molten gap above her crater. She knew she could restore the place to its former glory - but the ice layer above it was just too strong...

She created a species of birds made of pure fire, that would strive until they'd eventually fill the ice cave, to weaken the ceiling in preparation for BOOYAH number 2.

"What are you saying, fire isn't something you can make life out of? I don't care, for I am - wait a second, I don't have a name yet? Let's see... "Overly-Theatrical Goddess"... "OTG"... Yes! That's it! My name shall be Otigee!"

-95-
Otigee (theatrical)
-Created fire birds in the crater

A god(dess?) with the form of a loose cloud of ice crystals drifts in from the endless void

"Oh, hello there, whats this you've built here, it looks interesting" the god says as it surveys the planet

"Oh, but this won't do at all" the god says as they notice the thinning ice over the magma
taking some of the lichen, the god modifies it so that it absorbs heat and send it... somewhere else

"My apologies to whoever was uncovering the magma, but this world is beautiful and I cannot bear to see it burn"

-100-
unnamed god(dess?) (ice)
-created frost lichen to maintain the ice above the magma

As the age advanced, the photosynthetic organisms continued to proliferate beneath the ice, where the sun's harshest radiation could not reach. This increased the production of oxygen level to the point where the atmosphere was saturated with the stuff, which started reacting with itself in the upper layers under effect of UV radiation.

Absorbing over 70% of the more energetic UV rays to break up oxygen compounds and recombine the bits into ozone, the stratosphere became hotter. While there was less overall energy reaching the surface of Caseus', the sunlight was much kinder to exposed life - which could now also proliferate above the ice.

The staining of the ice surface started to slowly reduce the amount of solar energy reflected back to space.
This, combined with the thermal radiating properties of the ice lichens, caused the global temperature to increase very gradually.

-115-
Natural Phenomena
-Ozone layer formed
-Proliferation of surface photosynthetic organisms
-Slight increase in the global temperature

Lets reward stuff!

100 power points exist. No more. No less.

If you obtain some, you can give them away.

If for whatever reason it becomes unclear where some points should go, they go to OP.

In the beginning, EMAN The Founder has all 100.

If you do a complete Tome of Time update, you get 2PP from anyone inactive since the last update version. You should only update ToT if it's been a reasonably long time or the game has slowed down.

If you do a complete summary of the present state of the game, same as previous but 1PP from each inactive person since last ToT edition.

If you take a turn, you get 1PP from the player with the most.

If your summary was used at all in ToS you have protection from PP tax for that edition. Safe from present state updates too.

ACTIVE USES
1PP span of time greater than 5 million years.
3PP cause a thriving race, fauna, or flora to go extinct OR a create new species that is already thriving within a turn. Evolution(change) is still free.

PASSIVE BENEFITS
Most: Big Cheese status.

(dibs on next ToT update, already mostly done with it.)

-115-(holy cow)
SAVASANA, The Liberator
-Created REWARD TREATY

099 EMAN -1
001 SAVASANA +1

Not really. Mere 115 million is peanuts for the time scale we should be using; in fact, by now we should be at about 2.2 billion years, more or less done with the "boring" half of Earth's history:
The oldest such minerals analyzed to date—small crystals of zircon from the Jack Hills of Western Australia—are at least 4.404 billion years old
The ice age around 2.3 Ga could have been directly caused by the increased oxygen concentration in the atmosphere, which caused the decrease of methane (CH4) in the atmosphere.
For the period we've been covering, 100~200 million years steps would probably have been more realistic; now that the conditions for life are more adequate we should be able to cut to 50~100 million years steps. 25 MY when we get to the dinosaurs and 5 MY for large mammals are also feasible.

Hominids (including great apes) are 20 MY old, so 0.5~1 MY steps would be sufficient until we get to the first members of proper sentient species (the Homo genus is a bit less than 3 MY and the Sapiens species only 100~200 KY, having left Africa 60 KY ago); by then the steps will be necessarily much shorter.
