Minimalist Freeform God Game With No GM! Frozen Planet Edition!
« on: September 02, 2016, 08:05:25 pm »

In the Starless Cosmos floats a Massive Yellowed-Orange Sun, it is orbited by one barren planet roughly twice the size of Earth. From the Void come many, many Gods, who resolve to make the World more interesting.

One God, whose form is shaped like a very dapper rubber ducky with a top hat, speaks: "I ENJOY CHEESE! THUSLY, THIS WORLD SHALL BE KNOWN AS CASEUS! WHICH MEANS CHEESE IN ANCIENT LATIN, IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW. MY NAME IS EMAN, I AM THE INVERSELY-REVERSED GOD!"

After speaking EMAN, THE INVERSELY-REVERSED GOD becomes silent, and watches his associates.

A drunken anonymous deity leaves a party on another dimension, takes a wrong turn somewhere, and temporarily loses his bearings.

It's probably for the best that we'll never know just what was being served to the guests, but the end result was an ominous rumble from his guts, urgently prompting him to relieve himself on a hole in the cheesy ground before going off to find the way back to his own pocket dimension and a clean robe...

A few million years later, the planet is populated by galalith-exoskeletoned lactophage critter-crawlers. Life ALWAYS finds a way!

The planet's crust, however, has become a gigantic casu marzu.((Not literal cheese? Oh well...))

((You do know Caseus isn't literally made of cheese, right?))

An overly-theatrical goddess decides to blow up a considerable portion of Caseus's crust - about a fifth of it - to replace it with a massive magma-filled crater, while yelling "BOOYAH" from the bottom of her metaphorical lungs.

While most of the explosion's debris just fell violently back to Caseus, and some was lost to space, a significant portion managed to enter orbit.
After a (cosmologically) very brief time, the debris had crashed into each other enough times to normalize its inclination into an equatorial path. Eventually the differently dense materials centrifuged and sorted themselves into brown, yellow and blue rings around the planet. Albeit hard on future space flight, it sure is a pretty view.

Eman, The INVERSELY-REVERSED GOD gazes upon Caseus, and is pleased the progress that the other Gods have made. He examines the Exoskeletoned Insects, and the massive Magma-Filled Crater, when he is stricken with inspiration.

Eman, THE INVERSELY-REVERSED GOD, takes many of the largest Insects, and shapes them into a new species of Enormous Black Chitinous Vines that can drain the Magma for nutrients, much like mundane Plants can do with Water. The Vines are extremely resistant to heat, but the cold is very uncomfortable to them. They can grow to be as long as thirty feet with many branches floating on the Magma. The thick Chitin shares this heat resistance and is nearly as durable as Iron. The Vine's Fiber is as durable as hardened leather, and is flexible enough to use as rope. The Chitinous Vine will drain the Magma Crater over the course of a few millennia, but, as the Crater is connected to the mantle of Caseus, the Crater constantly refills with Magma. If it weren't for the Chitinous Vines, the World would eventually be flooded with Magma.

"I think I'll call this Species of Vine, Icirnit."

The galactic entity with a robe blacker than black, scythe in one hand and a giant hourglass in the other hovers above the planet. Skeletal arms lift out of the robes and hold each artifact high in the air.

Caseus glows pink as the god speaks...

"Okay guys let's keep track of time here. I know we're still in the millions of years turn cycles but tidyness is godliness."

Pink runes begin to appear around the planet and the planet fades back to its normal color.

The pink runes begin all flying in one direction; a large tomb appears and they fly on to its' pages.

Eman, The INVERSELY-REVERSED GOD speaks.

"Well done Reaper, I'm sure that your Manuscript will help to keep things organized around here, wherever here is... It's quite difficult to judge the location of this Reality without any landmarks... I think I'll remedy that this very instant!"

The Rubber Duck God raises his hands wings appendages, and shapes an enormous cosmic orb in the cosmos. The cosmic orb surrounds The Sun, Caseus, and the Rings of Caseus, differentiating it from the Timeless Void. The orb is little more than a dividing point between Space and the Void, anything can pass through it easily, but why anything would want to is anyone's guess.

"There! Now we know that Reality is contained within the gigantic, glowing orb! Come to think of it, I still don't know where exactly everything is, considering that something's location is based on the location of everything around it, and Literally Nothing at all surrounds the orb containing Reality, which must mean that Reality is located precisely in the middle of nowhere! Hmm, any being with a capacity for Logic could rationalize that, I think that I've achieved absolutely nothing of any consequence. Bah, Abstract, Dimensional Cartography is hard."

Eman, The INVERSELY-REVERSED GOD attempts to determine the exact location Reality and realizes that it's literally in the middle of Nowhere, giving himself a headache.

Although counteracted by convective currents, the surface of the magma sea starts to solidify at some points. This increases Caseus' internal pressure, causing the planet's crust to finally burst in intense volcanism along the main fracture lines from the suborbital debris' impact shock waves. Earthquakes and acid rain almost wipe out all life on Caseus.
Closer to the magma sea the denser fracture lines crumble the crust to collapse into the mantle, forming fiery fjords that snaked across the globe.
The Icirnit are split into separated populations but gain new feeding grounds, including the sulphuric lakes that form from the rain; the critter crawlers are almost extinct and have to resort to whatever niches they can grow into just to survive.

Despite the new hardships the Melting brought, the few surviving Critter Crawlers began to rapidly adapt to their new environment. After a few million years, the Critter Crawlers have bounced back from the catastrophe and are now able to survive the Hot areas, even if it isn't comfortable. Many Critter Crawlers become Herbivores, consuming the Icirnit Vines and convert the tremendous amount of Heat and Cooled Magma into nutrients. Some Critter Crawlers grow much faster, larger and sturdier to consume Herbivores, many Carnivores have spikes, deadly stingers, or elongated mandibles. Some Critter Crawlers develop mosquito-like proboscis, shed their Exoskeletons and develop Insectoid wings, to escape Carnivores, and survive by draining nutrients from Icirnit Vines and their Herbivorous Cousins. Many grow minuscule to conserve resources, and begin to burrow crude homes into Icirnit Vines and the ground, surviving off of each other and Icirnit consumption. A handful of Critter Crawlers develop frog-like tongues to more easily consume tiny Critter Crawlers.

With the widened opportunities the Icirnit evolve as well. Most stay somewhat true to their Vine shapes, and simply develop into different niches. Some Vines grow firmer, become much taller, roughly 7-8 feet, and grow elaborately-patterned branches and spoon-shaped leaves to more efficiently gather the acidic rain which has developed a rough cycle not dissimilar to Earth's Water cycle. Many Vines grow smaller, and thinner, wrapping themselves around other, larger Icirnit Vines to leech nutrients as parasites. Others become smaller, and more bush-like, to take advantage of the space between Vine Trees. Soon, many Icirnit Vine Forests flourish alongside the Magma Coastline, but further inland, it is still barren desert, apart from a few very resilient hardy Critter Crawlers.

-40-

Natural Phenomena
-Variety of Critter Crawler and Icirnit Organisms increases drastically.
-Caseus has developed an Acid Rain cycle which many Organisms begin to use as a base in lieu of Magma.

Enam, The INVERSELY-REVERSED GOD, looks upon this disinterestedly, before speaking.

"The World is awfully dry, and very hot. I hope the world cools eventually."

Millions of years passed. The molten sea and fjords gradually cooled down as Caseus radiated its heat to the void, until its internal dynamics no longer resembled those of a pressure cooker; volcanism abated on all but the largest fracture lines, which kept expanding.
As the age passed, most of the acid rains on the magma sea. Water, nitrogen, and carbon compounds evaporated back before even hitting the surface; sulphuric acid, however was mostly precipitated and reabsorbed by the mantle.

The volcanic cataclysm is over, plate tectonics mechanisms take over to reshape Caseus. Free of most of the greenhouse gasses, the temperature drops enough for the water to settle and form lakes, seas and oceans.

The primordial extremophiles struggled and adapted; their progeny bore very little resemblance to the original critter crawlers and Icirnit: they bloomed in a paraphernalia of shapes and colours to delight and entertain the gods... all the while viciously killing, feeding and breeding (which also entertained the gods, but in more visceral ways).

((You wanted conflict? Here you go!))
Alnis, a warmongering deity, whispered dark and deadly secrets so that the struggle for survival became more vicious than ever: teeth and claws and quills and horns grew longer, armour became thicker; the smallest of all would infiltrate larger creatures, commandeered the biological machinery that kept their victims alive, and eventually destroyed them from inside.
Some went as far as to develop a multitude of cruel and destructive chemical weapons: poisons for hunting or defending themselves. Most would make these weapons selective, killing only when injected into the victim; not few had toxic slimes all over their bodies that caused paralysis or necrosis on predators foolish enough to eat them, sometimes even approaching them would be greeted by a bitter or caustic spray... but the nastiest of them all was a post-Icirnit species which started poisoning their entire environment with dioxygen to repel both competitors and predators.

Atmospheric methane reacted with this newfangled molecular oxygen and decayed to the less greenhouse-active carbon dioxide; Caseus' temperature fell to new lows, and soon the entire planet became a frozen snowball.
The Great Oxygen Holocaust was at hand, and Alnis cackled manically as he watched multitudes of species disappearing into the ravenous maw of extinction.

Unwittingly this created a whole new expanding biome to be colonized by whatever was sufficiently resilient and adaptable, and, as always, life WILL find a way.

((What? you did ask for it... ;)
I'm loving this thread, it gives me the opportunity to play the "reality ensues" card and (at least for now) teach some of the less known -but by no means unimportant- history of our own planet.

Anyway, I did promote two mass extinction events so far, and might -or rather, probably- will do it again. Should I apologise?))
